Come on August

26 Jul

Thank god the heat is starting to subside around here, if i have to listen to another person complain about the temperature i think i’m going to snap… it’s not that bad… relax. Sorry thought that it needed to be said. Anyways here’s a few songs:

.

Phineas and the Lonely Leaves- The Feeling

.

.

.

.

.

..

Phineas and the lonely leaves are one of my favoritist bands. I’ve been pacing for some time now waiting for them to put out the kids we use to be and it was most definitely worth the wait. I don’t know what it is about these guys but the lyrics kill me every single time a song of theirs comes up. Feeney delivers his lyrics with such passive realism that listening feels like it’s merely  deep conversation rather than a one-sided piece of indie art. The band overall are one of those rare collectives where you can tell that each comfortably fits into a whole rather than a group of ego’s shuffling over each other. There’s  never a situation where Phineas and the lonely leaves can’t mix easily into the ethos of any decent playlist and that’s worth it’s weight in gold to me.  They gave out the album for free on July fourth but in case you missed it or this is your first taste of this phenomenal band they’re still handing out a couple free tracks over on their band page .

I hope the band doesn’t mind but i’m going to put another song up this week from them that’s my personal favorite: When We Were Young .

.

.
.

Gramercy Riff- The Freezedown

For all the great music that’s been brought out over the last few years  i’m really surprised by the limited amount of swing-your-hips indie rock to be found. Gramercy Riff put this out last summer and as with any song worth it’s salt The freezedown has not lost it’s shake over the time that’s passed since.

.

.

.

Brown Recluse- Impressions of a City Morning

.

.

.

.

.

Brown Recluse leaked this late last year and i have no idea how i’ve continued to shuffle it along until now. It’s got the whole capture the feeling of a lazy summer in only one song down better than just about anyone else. I love it. There’s something warming about a song that floats perfectly between focal point and the background depending on the context in which we’re listening to it. Most bands create songs intended for one or the other but rarely can they walk the line between the two with such ease.

.

.

.

Dinosaur Feathers- Please, Please George

.

.

.

Solid throwback rock with some of the better reel to reel texture any band could hope for. It’s about time Dinosaur Feathers put out something new.

.

.

.

.

Pete And The Pirates- Eyes Like Tar

Let this one breathe for a minute before you judge. It takes a second to catch the actual vibe of this song. I think we can all appreciate a song that can’t be completely decoded twenty seconds in.

.

.

.

.

.

RARECHILD – Let the Sky Light Up

.

.

.

.

.

There’s a dark undercurrent to let the sky light up that i can’t remember having ever heard from other bands, Fever Ray maybe.  Michael Friedrich continues to impress me…hopefully rarechild will stick around for a while unlike rahim who at the  pivotal point i got people listening to rahim the band packed up and moved on. I’m not a futurologist but with their twin shadows catchyness  mixed with the ominous apocalypse now vibe i’m predicting big things for rarechild

.

.

.

New Animal- Up!

.

.

.

Hook Moon- The Fourth Of July

.

.

.

.

.

I’m sorry my dear,
but enough is enough.
The more sorry we are,
the less we’re just in love.

If this distance makes any more fondness grow
It’ll be cracking right up through the floor.
But I love my loneliness cause to a child,
A firecracker is the Fourth of July

.

.

.

Germany Germany – Too Fast

‘.

Drew Harris may be relatively unknown but  he is also one of the more consistent new comers, and harder working artists, to flash across the radar in the past year. As soon as i’d gotten familiar with one of his albums last year he’d put out another that was just as solid. I wish more bands had his dedication.  I imagine quite a bit of hype heading this guys way before the years over and if not i’ll keep throwing songs up to remind you how decent this dudes music is.

.

.

.

Israel Nash Gripka- Drown

.

.

.

.

.

.

Whiskeytown and Wilco are two solid comparisons i can come up with for gripka. Roots based lyrics with the the whole “i live this shit” kind of attitude… i dig it. One thing i’ve noticed about his music is that it’s only good when not in the background, if you don’t have time to focus on what he’s saying just put something else on,  i’m not sure why but it’s got a very offsetting sound behind conversation or while i’m busy with something else it’s probably the fact that he’s so adament in his delivery of the lyrics. This is a good thing, every artist that’s ever transcended trends within genre’s has had to bare those same qualities like a torch. I’m not trying to get ahead of myself and say anything other than Israel Nash Gripka has potential to do big things… most decent bands don’t even have that.

All songs are for promotion only. If you or an artist you represent has music on this page and you would like it removed because you feel the artist is more important than the art just let me know and it’ll be removed, and i’ll also never recommend the music again because you/they are obviously in it for the wrong reasons.   Also if there’s any music i’m missing or missing the point on just let me know

Building Our Archetecture

19 Jul

After making up the summer mix i came away craving some lyric heavy songs. Those ones that help hold the heart rather than moving the feet.  This week is a slow build but it still delivers

Stornoway- Fuel Up

I don’t know how i missed Stornoway last year but i did.  I’m on such a kick for this band right now. Every song i’ve listened to has been amazing. Fuel Up was my toe in the water and when i first heard it i found myself just repeating the song for a half hour. I’ve got a lot going on in my personal life that has me on my heels a bit which  could explain why this is my track 1 for this weeks collective.

.

.

.

Arron Dean- To Mary, Love John Watson

.

.

.

.

.

.“No man dies of love… I think that there’s some truth in that”

This is one of those songs that speaks for itself. Dean talks around the subject quite a bit in this one rather than being straightforward about what he’s truly saying and it works really well…REALLY well.

.

.

.

Scattered Trees- A Conversation About Death on New Years Eve

.

.

.

David Bazan- A Few Broken Pieces

Bazan did this song brilliantly. Pedro The Lion was incredible but inevitably there would always have came a point where david Bazan would have had to move on, i mean, how could he not? Rarely does “maturing” coincide with creating something great but Bazan has accomplished just that with his solo endeavors.   It’s also nice to hear someone deal with every aspect of criticism, equally from both vantage points of self and external. This song just oozes with sarcasm and pretension and truth in every line which is just another reason Bazan will always be alligned with Oberst and Kasher. I’m so glad he put this song out it just feels good listening to , like having a close friend explain why he has grown up and moved on.  “man we could have made it big sound but i love to let my good friends down”

.

.

.

Oregon Bike Trails – High School Lover

.

..

.

.

.

.

.

This weeks Oregon Bike Trails addiction is for High School Lover.  Oregon Bike Trails makes the best music out for listening to in the summer. I’ll never underappreciate a song that brings on a smile and makes life better.

.

.

.

Shout Out Louds- Fall Hard

.

..

.

.

.

.

If you haven’t realized by now how solid Shout Out Louds are then i’m afraid you may never get it.  I dig this song because you can take “if you fall hard i fall harder” either way depending on your mood and what sort of state your personal life is in. I know this from my own experience where two weeks ago i was putting this on a playlist for my girlfriend who is now my ex and in that expanse of time between there and now the song still seems fitting.

.

.

.

King Charles- Love Lust

Love lust is as catchy as a slow clap in 1998 .

.

.

.

Oh Land – Perfection

I caught a video a few weeks ago from Oh land (the first one i posted on the facebook wall from them) and immediately was attracted to what this band is doing. Like a chill Florence and the Machine or Coco Rosie with pop sensibility. Each song breathes exceptionally well “perfection” is a solid example of that.

.

.

.

Gobble Gobble- Lawn Knives

I name dropped Gobble Gobble into one of the recent heycoolkid posts and as usual i’ve felt guilty for not having just thrown a song up from them so others can see what i’m talking about when i say that seeing Gobble Gobble live is on my bucket list. Sweat drenching intensity, GG sound like it’s no secret to themselves how damn good their art is (read: THEY HAVE CONFIDENCE). My neighbors are usually playing nelly so i’m sure they haven’t quite been appreciating my blaring this through my apartment every day when i wake up but when you sleep until two the general consensus when climbing out of bed is to get motivated in the shortest time possible…Lawn Knives is the best song i’ve found in a long while at doing that.

.

.

.

Ivan and Alyosha- Beautiful Lie

.

.

.

.

.

.

Any band referencing Dostoevsky in their name will always catch my attention. That’s how it all started with my giving Ivan and Alyosha a chance.

.

.

.

Digits- Lost Dream

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

Very similar to Love Lust in that the lyrical rhythm carries the song. More of the same good vibe from digits.

.

.

.

Das Pop- Never Get Enough

.

.

.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club- Spread Your Love

.

.

.

.

.

.

The first track i’ve heard from Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and enjoyed. After digging this one it might be necessary for me to go back and give the other songs I’ve heard in the past another chance.

.

.

.

Motel Beds- Obey Your Lunch

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

The Wooden Birds- Maneater(hall and oats cover)

.

.

.

.

.

..

.

There are so many great cover songs going around that i wish i posted more. Unfortunately (or fortunately) there are enough people throwing it out online already. I’m not exactly sure why this one makes the playlist outside of the fact that it’s from The Wooden Birds (one of my favs) and it’s a hall and oats song (another one of my favs). This relaxed take on the classic feels good without the 80′s stamp that is the Achilles heal of the original.

.

.

.

Atlas Genius- Trojans

.

.

.

.

..

.

The chorus of Trojans come dangerously close to crossing the line between pop sensibility and genereric pop but the verses make it it legitimately worth playing with that proverbial fire.

.

.

.

Husky- History’s Door

.

.

.

As usual if you or a band you represent would like some content removed from the page I’ll be more than happy to do it. I’ll also never recommend the music again in a positive light. It still amazes me the amount of bands, and especially labels, who expect people to go out of there way to check a band out by paying for it first. It’s art! The money will most likely come wouldn’t you like to do it without being greedy? that’s my rant. If there’s any music i’m missing or missing the point on here’s the comments section let me know about it.

Pretentiously Unpretentious…July 2011

7 Jul

.

Pheramones- We Already Know

.

.

.

.

.

.When in doubt open with pheramones. At least that’s my philosophy when it comes to playlists i’m not sure what the track 1 should be. Energy, talent, pretentiously unpretentious… these guys have it all when it comes to being an ideal indie band. This song is a perfect example that they were ahead of the curve when putting this out in 2009.

.

.

Steel Phantoms- Fast Stop

.

.

.

.

.

Whenever listening to steel phantoms i can’t help but think this is what Caleb McCoach would sound like if he were more upbeat or maybe this is what Ra Ra Riot would come across like if they were more indie and less scene. Either way i dig steel phantoms and their ability to sound real and worth my time listening to.

.

.

Seapony- Dreaming

Just lo-fi enough to keep things interesting Seapony are one of the few bands who have found a way to embrace the hipster trend without using it as a crutch to hide behind. This is a genre they belong in unlike so many other (over) hyped bands i’m forced to listen to in growing numbers each week.

.

.

.

ARMS- Tiger Tamer

Todd Goldstein has that (sadly) rare ability of creating songs with such solid lyrics coupled with well fitting instrumentation that it appears effortless in the most flawless sort of way. Not that they are minimalistic but something about his songs sound like he knows how to do just enough for the track to come across contently and complete without weighing the song down by doing too much. Arms is currently on tour with Steel Phantoms and i didn’t know that until after this mix had been made, nice little coincidence.

.

.

.

Alex Winston- Sister Wife

I spent the weekend in Wisconsin with my girlfriend and her family and the most horrible disaster imaginable happened to me on the way there, my ipod died and to make things exponentially worse my girlfriend decided not to bring her mac for me to keep it charged. AAAHHHH! I was in the land of country music without a prayer.  The nearest place to buy anything other than skoal or cow feed was a walmart forty minutes away. FAIL. The trip itself was enjoyable enough that i was able to overlook the absence of hope for a few days but the drive home became a nightmare. Two hours of standstill traffic had me rummaging through the glovebox in search of a different mix from the one  we’d been listening to on repeat for the entire trip since the ipod debacle.  Like watching the heavens part and a dove descend i found a handful of burnt cd’s buried beneath my gf’s  scion manual and random pieces of glovebox parchment.  We were inching through Chicago when this track came on and turned the ole frown upside down. To anyone that was stuck on the i80/94 watching some guy dance frantically while his girlfriend watched on with fear… that was me and i had my reasons.

.

.

.

Cults – Make Time

.

.

.

.

.

.

.“Make Time” is one of my favorite tracks for any background playlist. It’s a perfect song to have on when doing things (or in my usual case… planning to do things). I’m not sure why i haven’t heard more buzz heading in Cults direction, i’m sure it’s coming.

.

.

Psychic Powers- Dreamboat (RAC Mix)

..

.

.

.

.

.

.

Amo Joy- Diggity Doom

.

.

.

.

.

It’s not much of a secret that i think Amo Joy are one of the better bands in town. Fun, intense, and sneakily solid. A band truly meant for more than Indianapolis has to offer them,  I hope they realize that before it’s too late.

.

.

In Tall Buildings- Warm Rock

.

.

.

.

.

.I had In Tall Buildings on a recent playlist for one of his more stripped down songs. I just want to make sure that everyone realizes there is a reason Erik Hall isn’t considered a solo artists, i think this song gets the job done of proving that.

.

.

Pheramones- I Wait

I rarely put two songs on a mix from the same band.  Every now and thenthere is a band worth the exception and this is one. It took me nine songs before i finally gave into the urge to put this song up. I wait is probably my favorite pheramones song and i can’t believe i haven’t put it up already.

.

.

The Milk Carton Kids- Maybe It’s Time (live)

.

.

.

.

.

.This song doesn’t really need a description it speaks for itself. Here’s a chance to check it out though.

.

.

Meredith Bragg – Birds of North America

.

.

.

.

.Any band that succesfully creates well layered songs that are allowed to breathe will always be underrated. Meredith Bragg is underrated.

.

.

The West Valley – Lay Down

.

.

.

.

.

.Every time one of The West Valley’s songs comes up i find the next three minutes flowing much more enjoyably.  Lay down reminds me slightly of “travellin’ song” by the avett brothers but only enough as a reference while still coming across in it’s own creative way. My favorite track from The West Valley is “I wonder what would’ve happened” so don’t be surprised when that comes up on another heycoolkid post in the near future, lay down just seemed to flow better with this weeks collection of songs, if you feel like getting ahead of me and grab it for yourself here .

.

.

Vetiver- Everyday

A great song to play on a summer evening, it’s definitely been played on many of mine.

.

.

.

This Will Destroy You- The World Is Our _

.

.

.

.

.

Although Vetiver’s “Everyday” is probably a better closing song for this week, i’m ending this one with an amazing song from This Will Destroy You. Don’t let the lack of vocals mislead you, this song has something to say that ninety-nine percent of bands can only hope to.

Let me know if there’s any music i may be missing or missing the point of. All songs are for promotion purposes only so if you are/represent an artist on this page and would like something removed let me know and i’ll be more than happy to both do it and never recommend your music again. Nothing personal but if word of mouth is less important than making a couple of dollars you are in it for the wrong reasons and that’s something i want nothing to do with.
