Heycoolkid!’s 100 Best Songs Of 2011

Heycoolkid!’s 100 Best Songs Of 2011 (41-55)

.

.

55. Middle Brother – “Me, Me, Me”

What is there not to love when combining key elements of Delta Spirits, Deer Tick, and Dawes?

Me, Me, Me” is an indie honky-tonk set on fire.  Every element from the Jerry Lee Lewis style piano to the Lynard Skynard-esc lead this song comes off as if we’ve heard it our entire life rather than being something new from three relatively new faces.

.

.

54. French Films – “Pretty In Decadence”

French FilmsSomewhere between The Beach Boys and The Cure falls “Pretty In Decadence” the first single from the French Films debut album “Imaginary Future.”

If anything “Pretty In Decadence” has an overall feeling similar to what Robert Smith would have given off if he weren’t constantly obsessing over breaking up with who he’s with or wanting to sleep with who he’s not, which I realize makes as much sense as saying a band sounds like The Smiths if Morrissey had actually gotten the girl (Often I remind myself how lucky we all are that Morrissey didn’t get what he wanted despite how nicely he asked). For the sake of French Films though this is a solidreference point to start with.

The great thing about this song is when you get past the tap-your-feet-and-get-moving vibe and really sink into the lyrics you’ll realize why I get the impression of The Smiths being the cornerstone in the psyche of French Films despite their obvious infatuation with The Cure,

I went to heaven to get advice, I asked for God but he didn’t have time. Hoped I could be happy, I could be free from the gun they keep pointing at me. Cable TV, pills and afterwork to sleep at night. “Son it’s always worse somewhere else” oh what a wonderful, wonderful life. Everytime I walk through the main street, everytime I know I would rather stay this way baby than wave the flag for the bloodsucking blues,”

and this is probably the most optimistic song on the album. – (Via)

53. Lanterns On The Lake – “You’re Almost There”

Lanterns On The Lake“Hazy, elegant vocals, sombre piano keys, percussive echoes and soaring strings all moulded into a beautiful and intricately arranged 3 minutes 16 pretty much guarantees that Lanterns On The Lake’s latest song ‘You’re Almost There’ will find its way to being one of our favourite tracks of the summer “- The Line Of Best Fit

.

.

52. Scattered Trees – “A Conversatiion About Death On New Year’s Eve”

Sympathy the absolutely amazing album from Scattered Trees, which was penned after the death of lead singer Nate Eiesland’s father, embodies every aspect of emotion possible;  As with some of the greatest art ever created if you give an artist something so powerful they need to find a release, a way to make sense of things uncontrollable, somehow it manifests into something great.

The two stand out tracks from the album are the title track and “A Conversation About Death On New Years Eve,” the later having a somber hook you can’t help but sing along with which shows us that Scattered Trees can channel their own personal turmoil and conflict through lyrics with a rare strength within the honesty. What impresses me so much about this song is that they are able to take those lyrics and show us how creatively talented they are by transforming them into a tangible experience that we’re thankful to share with them.

.

.

51. Sleepy Vikings – “Calm”

I realized when I began going over my best album’s and best song’s lists that Sleepy Vikings have become this year’s “sleeper” band for me (no pun intended). Whenever one of their songs comes on the thought never crosses my mind to skip over it and I almost always find myself singing along yet until I started to work out some sort of hierarchy of which songs meant the most to me this year it never crossed my mind how many Sleepy Vikings tracks I have listened to over and over and over again.

Between the perfect vocal workings in “Calm” and what is probably my favorite guitar solo of 2011, there was no way I could exclude this song from the list.

I rarely break down instrumentation but this is one of the few exceptions. The lead guitar in “Calm” is absolutely ideal. Anyone can practice scales and work on finger tricks so they can fly up and down the neck in blazing sixteenth and thirty second notes but it takes a true skilled musician to hold themselves back and play only what is absolutely necessary to make the song better as a whole rather than using distortion and delay to scream out “Hey look at me”. This lead gives the song exactly what it needs to elevate it at the precise moment necessary, people with horrible tastes can have their Eddie Van Halen I’ll take Julian Conner any day.

50. Absofacto – “80844264@81 (Love Song)”

I’m a lens broke in two to the tenth power
even through facets i can see, over a kaleidoscopic scene,
your head, your arms, your teeth, your necks,
your rubber checks, your evil eye

I’m still on your side, but out of sight and out of mind

I’d actually forgotten about this song until I looked over Birp!‘s Best of 2011 list. For some reason I was thinking this one came out last year, February feels like a lifetime ago, in a way I guess it was, we’re all in different places now and that’s kind of what this song is about.

.

.

49. The Rural Alberta Advantage – “Stamp”

“It is not a small-sounding song, so start mentally preparing yourself for the inevitable full-venue singalong.”P4k

I feel like 2011 was a strong step forward for The Rural Alberta Advantage.  Putting out a perfectly crafted album helps, putting on an extensive tour, which included a stop in INDY of all places, didn’t hurt either.  This was my favorite song from Departing. If you haven’t given them a chance yet pick the album up for yourself… your life will be better for it.

.

.

48. Summer Camp – “Better Off Without You”

I’m still not completely sure how I feel about Summer Camp.

One thing that I am sure about though is how damn good “Better Off Without You” is.

It’s not the music that keeps me with one toe in the water, they’ve definitely got that under wraps, it’s how they act in interviews and their whole approach to how they put this album out. They seem to almost be TOO “cool,” ya know, I scratch my head in wondering how contrived is this entire process. As with most bands the truth almost always unfolds rather quickly, there are too many camera’s and microphones hanging around to keep who we really are out of the spot light.

I would never put this song up if I didn’t have the utmost respect for where Summer Camp are at this very moment, creating ideal music, so please don’t misinterpret what I’m saying. I just don’t want to put it out there that I’m one hundred percent on board with these guys until we’ve come to know who they are and what they are really about.

.

.

47. Future Islands – “Balance”

I’ve been sitting on this album for a month or so now and if you look at my listening habits in that month, Future Islands are way up there in the upper echelons.

I’ve only been a fan of the Baltimore band since early last year after arriving late on their scene, but being completely enamored with their passion, their sound, and their songcraft I’ve been a huge supporter since.

Now just over a year since their excellent second album “In Evening Air” they’ve followed it up with “On The Water” another stunning listen, and if you’ve heard the songs released from it so far in “Before The Bridge”, and “Balance”, you know I speak the truth. - Listen Before You Buy

.

.

46. A Little Nothing – “White Hill”

A Little NothingA Little Nothing make ideal headphone music. There is a very one-on-one vibration to there songs. Although I’ll concede that the idea of listening to this song on vinyl while hanging out with some crush would probably be one of the better musical experiences since I made-out to Enter Sandman in seventh grade.

White Hill” is an ideal soundtrack song, I can’t believe I didn’t include this one on the Perks Of Being A Wallflower post a few weeks ago… it is more than fitting.

.

.

45. Gem Club – “Twins”

Gem Club’s “Breakers” LP comes out at the end of September, and “Twins” is the second early release from what is shaping up to be a highly enjoyable album, I’m kind of getting obsessed already. The interwoven strings and piano are so fitting with each other that you barely even notice their coexistence, everything blends so well that the thought of one without the other would seem off-balanced.

The vocals that Christopher Barnes gives us are complete and at the same time undemanding, coming across  passively as he sings “just your touch could cure my lonesome blood. You let go of everything you had and everything got left here waiting for what comes next. The state of things leaves time to me and I’ve been careless, I think too much, I want to lie still near you.  The wind shook the kiss from your mouth before I could learn whose twin I was.”

Such a heavy song to feel so weightless, yet it lingers and reminds us that there is something more to this than simple longing if only we ask “what’s he longing for”. (Via)

.

.

44. Cookies – “Wilderness Tips”

I was not prepared when I pressed play on this Cookies track, to say that  “Wilderness Tips” is addicting would be a huge understatement, this song is like one giant hook, ever shifting, so catchy, club ready, scene approved, a song so good we’re likely to be sick of it in four months.

The New York based cookies are Melissa Metrick, and former Mobius Band guitarist Ben Sterling.

I’ve downloaded a handful of cookies songs and they each deliver the same sugary goodness as on “Wilderness Tips.” I love it when a band’s name actually fits with their sound and there is not a band that comes to mind as more aligned with their name than Cookies which are delicious , sorry I had to say it,  lame+true=FACT. (Via)

.

.

43. Dark Mean – “Happy Banjo”

Simply put Dark Mean could be  good enough that they’re songs will bare significance for the rest of our lives.

Happy Banjo” remains as my favorite track from these guys whose entire sound embodies everything I look for when heading out on a road trip with friends.

.

.

.

42. Absofacto And 10k Cities – “Kiko (103 Words)”

Absofacto wrote some of the best lyrics I heard this year. “Kiko” is my favorite example.

Yesterday I wrote everything I know down in a notebook as a person of the past for future hands to flip through while scraping all the dirt from myincisors
paying more attention to the fine details of the here and the now than anyone who’s actually here now

and one hundred and three words is not enough to get me over that chasm
(that chasm, it’s keeping here from there)
if I can’t fold ‘em over I want to smash ‘em together

Scurrying around like the ant I am viewed through the window of the first class seat you undoubtedly lucked into .All that extra elbow room is being made poor use of by the boardroom bombshell sitting right next to you,
while counting the weeks till the future comes.

and one hundred and three words is not enough to get me over that chasm
(that chasm, it’s keeping here from there)
if I can’t fold ‘em over I want to smash ‘em together till they’re just dirt

,

41. Old Tapes – “Farewell”

Old TapesFarewell” is one of the most honest and necessary break-up songs ever recorded. I would not be surprised one bit if it ends up on some shitty teen reality show on MTV or some fade out ending on the WB. “Hate the show not the song,” I’m just going to have to repeat that over and over when it happens.

“I only miss you because you left before I did

Let that sink in for a second…some things just need to be said and sometimes other people have to say them for us to realize just how true they are. (via)

Heycoolkid!’s Best Albums Of 2011

17 Dec

If you haven’t been downright impressed with the overflow of incredible genre crossing music this year you are either a huge Nickleback fan or you are Amish, there’s no other logical excuse to complain about the status of music.

Last year when I put the “Best Albums” list together it was one of the first Heycoolkid! posts ever and with all honesty I was ill-prepared. This year I’m putting these albums up with complete confidence. Iron Eagle Vs Footloose. Music makes the montage.

21 Aug

I owe an apology to everyone for slacking last week and not having a playlist up. I’m now part of the  Listen Before You Buy family doing “New Music” posts and this is my first week involved with them  it’s something I’m excited about. Having never cared about editing or formatting and only about getting solid tracks out for people to hear has been different. So far it’s a little more stressful than I’m use to feeling from music but once I settle in I’m sure I’ll enjoy it.

Don’t think that anything will be lacking on this end because there’s enough great music coming out to go around and my focus has always been on creating playlists while there’s is on being the first place you go to for individual songs, videos, and honest motivation on what albums are worth picking up. I highly respect them so it’s a great feeling to be a part of it.

I would also like to make sure to give a huge THANK YOU to The Meaty Sauce Review for making my week exponential better with their Heycoolkid! mention in their  recent post.

Every week I set out with the thought process that I’m only going to do ten song playlists so i can post more often and have each person that hits on the site less likely to skip over a great song. The problem is I’ve got so use to the 20-22 songs that can fit onto a cd when making a playlist for a friend/cruise/adventure that it’s almost impossible for me to create something with the right flow to it with only ten songs and that’s how I’m defending myself for the following twenty-five songs. [anyone know how to put up zip files I NEED HELP my knowledge of music is far stronger than my knowledge of working the internet. I'm getting better though... I think]

Take the effort to download these tracks because each song  is more than worth it:

.

.

Scattered Trees – “A Conversation About Death On New Years Eve” [mp3]

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

..

.

The way this song slow builds itself and jumps off at the chorus is more than great. This is one of those tracks that i catch myself unconsciously singing along with at four in the morning, i should probably ask my roommates if they notice since I’m doing it with my headphones on.  Find out more about Scattered Trees here.

.

.

.

Colossal Gospel – “Bitter Man” [mp3]

.

.

.

.

.

If your a fan of Fleet Foxes i feel like Colossal Gospel should be a band you start paying attention to since they carry many similarities yet with a more upbeat touch.

.

.

.

Luke Temple – “Ophelia” [mp3]

.I’ve tried taking the name out of the equation to approach this song from a different angle but even with that i can’t help but be drawn towards how much this sounds like a modern touch on Simon and Garfunkel’s “Cecilia”.  I wish more bands could channel S&G the way Luke Temple has with “Ophelia”.  Bon Iver being the only recent artist that comes to mind, possibly Local Natives but maybe I’m just thinking of their phenomenal cover they did.

.

.

.

Baby Monster -”The Fear Of Charlie Sunrise” [mp3]

With my first post on Listen Before You Buy I chose Baby Monster’s song/video for “The Fear Of Charlie Sunrise” and for good reason.  I focused on the undercurrent in that post but when taking in the lyrics and the oh so amazing overall sound of this song there’s a lot less longing involved and whole lot more just down right upbeat indie perfection. Check the post out here I’m rather content with it and it would mean the world to me to know you guys are getting a chance to see what else I’ve got my hands in right now.

.

.

.

Arctic Death – “Basement Stars” [mp3]

.Solid rock at it’s finest. Arctic Death just dropped their self titled album at the beginning of July. Take a chance to listen through the tracks over on bandcamp I think you’ll find the motivation to get the album for yourself.

.

.

.

Dead North – “Spot Remover” [mp3]

“Spot Remover” makes me think of a more garage based Alkaline Trio or Themovielife.  There will always be a special place in my emo heart for bands that find a way to channel that early 2000′s energy in songwriting without making themselves come across like some throwback nostalgic carbon copy. Dead North have their own sound that is anything but a copy of anything other than solid music.

.

.

.

Greater Thieves – “Nothing To Do With Space” [mp3]

There are still bands creating great shoegaze and Greater Thieves are one of them. I’d actually thought this track was an instrumental and in the process of just letting it drift on through my speakers realized that “Nothing To Do With Space” lets in on some sparse lyrics that allow this song to develop into something that’s complete and completely fitting to have on at four in the morning. Pick up their entire self titled EP for free over at Bandcamp.

.

.

.

Young Buffalo – “Only We Can Keep You From Harm” [mp3]

I’ve been kicking myself ever since my first Young Buffalo post for having introduced these guys with a cover. Be it an amazing cover it still hardly does justice to how phenomenal, not to mention genre crossing, this band truly is. Young Buffalo are one of the very few bands where every song sounds different and nearly indistinguishable to tell that it’s them by merely listening. Having three members who take turns with the front man position from track to track obviously helps with this. This track starts off with a very Fever Ray vibe and completely switches the tone with the onset of their rhythm section.

One major strength of Young Buffalo is their strength live here’s a video to demonstrate.

.

.

.

Boy + Kite – “Think In Stereo” [Mp3]

The list of great summer songs to come out this year is nearly impossible to keep up with.I wish that I would have caught  “Think In Stereo” back in June rather than the tail end of August…better late than never I guess. This one from Boy + Kite is good enough to carry over to next year though so it’s not really a loss.

.

.

.

Grand Hallway – “Apple Tree”[Mp3]

“Apple Tree” may be my favorite track on this weeks mix. If you haven’t figured out by now my full on passion is for any song that is ideal for driving late at night and stirs up a bit of forgotten sadness. Some people avoid it, some people make it a point at least not to surround themselves with it. I choose to embrace it and Grand Hallway flourish in it.

.

.

.

Feist – “The Park” [mp3]

The best thing Feist has ever done was stepping out from Broken Social Scene and showing us what she’s capable of. Up until this point i thought i had figured her out but “The Park” has me questioning what i had limited myself to believe she was and more importantly was not capable of. With “The Park” she has stripped away the pop sensibility that she carries with such ease, turns out that’s not the only cross she can bare. I get teared up each time i hear this song and it’s her voice that does it, the way she draws so much emotion with those fragile vocal chords of hers. Someone give her a hug.

.

.

.

Saintseneca – “Grey Flag” [Mp3]

I made a huge error last weekend when i passed up going to this show. The amazing  Accordians had a house show in Fountain Square along with Saintseneca that I had originally planned on attending. Like happens from time to time my friends backed out for something much lamer and left me to make the decision of going to this show alone or not. Normally I can more than enjoy myself at a show alone, the chances of running into a friend is likely and if not I’m not typically one that minds going out on my own.  House shows are the only exception i can think of because who really wants to be in someones house with twenty people you don’t know feeling awkward chain smoking and staring at your phone? I will always regret choosing not to go because on Monday i finally took the time to check out the Saintseneca tracks i had downloaded. WOW! Thats the only word that comes close to describing what i instantly thought about this band from Columbus,OH. I have pulled up some live videos and continue to be impressed. DOWNLOAD THIS SONG! That’s not a request. This band is everything that can be right in music. I guarantee I won’t miss seeing them play in town again.

Here’s what I missed and hopefully you won’t:

.

.

.

.

Gold Leaves – “Cruel And Kind” [Mp3]

“Cruel and Kind” has a steady pace that just edges you along in passive comfort.  Seems like it would be more than fitting to add onto and independent film’s soundtrack, that’s what i’m hearing with each play anyways. Get to know Gold Leaves a little better over at facebook.

.

.

.

Kites With Lights – “Cosmonauts” [Mp3]

Every day this week when riding my bike to work I have started off with “Cosmonauts”. This may not seem like something worth mentioning but it really is because i never repeat listen. My ride to and from work is  the only time i get to relax while listening to the songs that i’ve enjoyed each day, the only chance i get to really experience them. I noticed on day one that this song gives off that eighties movie vibe that is in the action/music scene which is a great way to get you motivated about going into work (think Iron Eagle when pappy gets told to shove his rules “i’m doing it my way” and slips the tape in, the opening scene with the feet from footloose, or i’m trying to think of a good dirtbike/bmx scene from a movie but have drawn a blank- you get the idea though). I guess what i’m trying to say is Kites With Lights have created a song which is a perfect track for doing shit.

.

.

.

Yacht – “Shangri-La” [Mp3]

Is it just me or do Yacht remind you of what Matt and Kim would be like if they quit worrying about being “scene” and looking “hip”. I just hope yachts don’t follow along the same path. (Congratulations M&K for making me eat my words for supporting you guys by taking part in that Garbage of a song for converse. Andrew WK? Soulja Boy? Hope you’re proud! Converse is owned by Nike so if you think you’re going to soften this blow with “chuck taylors” it’s not happening… sell-outs. At least your songs fit in well with the scenes on “The Hills”)

.

.

.

Jamie Woon – “Night Air”[mp3]

Typically i rank R&B/Soul right next to reggae and drum circles on my list of music I don’t appreciate. Jamie Woon for some reason breaks through the misconceptions I have about his chosen genre to mix into his usually more dubstepish tracks and gets me to at least admit that, although few there are still people making decent music within the genre.

.

.

.

Neon Indian – “Polish Girl” [Mp3]

My slack in staying up to date on Heycoolkid! has made me just another part of the machine on this one instead of being ahead of the curve but i don’t even think that is of importance since it is Neon Indian and there is going to be blog hype behind whatever he puts out no matter what, being first holds no significance this time.

.

.

.

Junior Boys – “Banana Ripple” (Stay+ Remix) [Mp3]

As a fan of both the Junior Boys and Stay+ this song just feels right to me.

.

.

.

.

Pictureplane – “Post Physical” [Mp3]

Travis Egedy comes across as one of the most natural, and at the same time comfortable, electronic artists around. He manages to prove what he’s capable of without it being forced or unnatural, i wish every person who sets out to mix up something electro were able to do the same thing.

.

.

.

Leagues -”Haunted” [Mp3]

After looking over the Leagues website and seeing the kind of background these guys have I a suspicion it won’t be long before i regret posting this song. It just seems like Leagues has “Big” commercial radio ambitions and there is no denying with the catchiness and mainstream structure this song carry’s that it is very likely I will be sick of this song, and the people who will get into, before the year is out (think Foster the People). Still the song is good and enjoyable at this point so there’s no reason i shouldn’t give Leagues a fair shake.

.

.

.

Fool’s Gold – “Street Clothes” [Mp3]

.

.

.

.

.

.

Jenn Mierau – “Hush” [Mp3]

Anyone else dig when cute girls turn out to be super talented and creative? Just from what I’ve heard from her so far I’ve come to the conclusion that as long as she doesn’t secretly love Kid Rock or have an obsession with Jersey Shore we may actually be meant to be. But then again people like Jenn Mierau have standards which rules me out either way:) At least I can be a fan.

.

.

.

Cymbals Eat Guitar – “Definite Darkness” [Mp3]

Taking second only to Yu(c)k on my shows I’m stoked about list, Cymbals Eat Guitar will be here on October 22 with Hooray For Earth (!). “Definite Darkness” doesn’t do much to show how great these guys are on their instruments (or at least not as much as previous recordings have- but it does show case how solid of songs they are capable of making. I do without a doubt love the vocals on this track quite possibly more than any other CEG song. I am completely ready to sweat with these guys in October.

.

.

.

The Roadside Graves – “Love Me More”[mp3]

Songs that speak for themselves should not be this rare. What can i say that you won’t figure out in three minutes on your own? If you think of something let me know and I’ll edit but I don’t see it ever happening. I hope there are bands taking notes from The Roadside Graves at this moment.d

[Also here a cover from Roadside Graves that is one of my favorite covers of all-time The Roadside Graves - "Boy In The Yard (Odawas Cover)" [Mp3]

.

.

.

Sandro Perri – Futureactive Kid pt 1 [Mp3]

Sandro Perri helped create the level of recognition that experimental-electronic music has now reached and still proves that he has a place firmly planted in the psyche of modern indie music. “Impossible Spaces”, his first album in five years, comes out on Oct 18th.

Building Our Archetecture

19 Jul

After making up the summer mix i came away craving some lyric heavy songs. Those ones that help hold the heart rather than moving the feet.  This week is a slow build but it still delivers

Stornoway- Fuel Up

I don’t know how i missed Stornoway last year but i did.  I’m on such a kick for this band right now. Every song i’ve listened to has been amazing. Fuel Up was my toe in the water and when i first heard it i found myself just repeating the song for a half hour. I’ve got a lot going on in my personal life that has me on my heels a bit which  could explain why this is my track 1 for this weeks collective.

.

.

Arron Dean- To Mary, Love John Watson

.

.

.

.

.

.“No man dies of love… I think that there’s some truth in that”

This is one of those songs that speaks for itself. Dean talks around the subject quite a bit in this one rather than being straightforward about what he’s truly saying and it works really well…REALLY well.

David Bazan- A Few Broken Pieces

Bazan did this song brilliantly. Pedro The Lion was incredible but inevitably there would always have came a point where david Bazan would have had to move on, i mean, how could he not? Rarely does “maturing” coincide with creating something great but Bazan has accomplished just that with his solo endeavors.   It’s also nice to hear someone deal with every aspect of criticism, equally from both vantage points of self and external. This song just oozes with sarcasm and pretension and truth in every line which is just another reason Bazan will always be alligned with Oberst and Kasher. I’m so glad he put this song out it just feels good listening to , like having a close friend explain why he has grown up and moved on.  “man we could have made it big sound but i love to let my good friends down”

Oregon Bike Trails – High School Lover

.

..

.

.

.

.

.

This weeks Oregon Bike Trails addiction is for High School Lover.  Oregon Bike Trails makes the best music out for listening to in the summer. I’ll never underappreciate a song that brings on a smile and makes life better.

Shout Out Louds- Fall Hard

.

..

.

.

.

.

If you haven’t realized by now how solid Shout Out Louds are then i’m afraid you may never get it.  I dig this song because you can take “if you fall hard i fall harder” either way depending on your mood and what sort of state your personal life is in. I know this from my own experience where two weeks ago i was putting this on a playlist for my girlfriend who is now my ex and in that expanse of time between there and now the song still seems fitting.

King Charles- Love Lust

Love lust is as catchy as a slow clap in 1998 .

Oh Land – Perfection

I caught a video a few weeks ago from Oh land (the first one i posted on the facebook wall from them) and immediately was attracted to what this band is doing. Like a chill Florence and the Machine or Coco Rosie with pop sensibility. Each song breathes exceptionally well “perfection” is a solid example of that.

Gobble Gobble- Lawn Knives

I name dropped Gobble Gobble into one of the recent heycoolkid posts and as usual i’ve felt guilty for not having just thrown a song up from them so others can see what i’m talking about when i say that seeing Gobble Gobble live is on my bucket list. Sweat drenching intensity, GG sound like it’s no secret to themselves how damn good their art is (read: THEY HAVE CONFIDENCE). My neighbors are usually playing nelly so i’m sure they haven’t quite been appreciating my blaring this through my apartment every day when i wake up but when you sleep until two the general consensus when climbing out of bed is to get motivated in the shortest time possible…Lawn Knives is the best song i’ve found in a long while at doing that.

Ivan and Alyosha- Beautiful Lie

.

.

.

.

.

.

Any band referencing Dostoevsky in their name will always catch my attention. That’s how it all started with my giving Ivan and Alyosha a chance.

Digits- Lost Dream

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

Very similar to Love Lust in that the lyrical rhythm carries the song. More of the same good vibe from digits.

Das Pop- Never Get Enough

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club- Spread Your Love

.

.

.

.

.

.

The first track i’ve heard from Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and enjoyed. After digging this one it might be necessary for me to go back and give the other songs I’ve heard in the past another chance.

The Wooden Birds- Maneater(hall and oats cover)

.

.

.

.

.

..

.

There are so many great cover songs going around that i wish i posted more. Unfortunately (or fortunately) there are enough people throwing it out online already. I’m not exactly sure why this one makes the playlist outside of the fact that it’s from The Wooden Birds (one of my favs) and it’s a hall and oats song (another one of my favs). This relaxed take on the classic feels good without the 80′s stamp that is the Achilles heal of the original.

Atlas Genius- Trojans

.

.

.

.

..

.

The chorus of Trojans come dangerously close to crossing the line between pop sensibility and genereric pop but the verses make it it legitimately worth playing with that proverbial fire.

Husky- History’s Door

.

.

As usual if you or a band you represent would like some content removed from the page I’ll be more than happy to do it. I’ll also never recommend the music again in a positive light. It still amazes me the amount of bands, and especially labels, who expect people to go out of there way to check a band out by paying for it first. It’s art! The money will most likely come wouldn’t you like to do it without being greedy? that’s my rant. If there’s any music i’m missing or missing the point on here’s the comments section let me know about it.
