Our Bodies Make The Right Conversation

1 Dec

Download: Ocean Is Theory – “Best Intentions”

Ocean Is Theory

This song sets the tone for what kind of mood I’m in for today; something a little more visceral, emphasis on all things moving and upbeat, “Best Intentions” epitomizes those ideals.

.

.

Download: DZ Deathrays – “Gebbie Street”

DZ DeathraysThese guys sound more like London than Brisbane and for some reason that makes DZ Deathrays more endearing. Arrogantly confident in the best kind of way, this song is as powerful as any form of liquid courage when it comes to giving Caucasians the support they need  to approach the opposite sex.

.

.

Download: Jhameel – “Wicked”

Jhameel WickedAs I’m typing this Jhameel is #2 on We Are The Hunted‘s emerging artist list! There is a reason I put this guy’s stuff up every chance I get. For fuck’s sake have you ever heard someone with more potential?!? Next week he drops his acoustic track which is the one I’m looking forward to the most out of the “Waves” series, something inside me says it’s going to be magical.

.

.

Download: Alabama Shakes – “On Your Way”

Alabama ShakesYou know that friend of yours who is obsessed with Adele; The one who only seems to think that one good singer has surfaced since the cold war and that singer is Adele? We all have one. Alabama Shakes is the closest thing to gaining any sort of ground in the indie vs mainstream battle with said friend. I’m not even a huge Janis Joplin fan but there is something about listening to “On Your Way“  that makes me really appreciate what she did for music and her role in getting us to the point that we have a new band like Alabama Shakes.

.

.

Download: Phantogram – “Turning Into Stone”

Phantogram

To say I was timid about the Nightlife EP would be an understatement, something in me believed that Phantogram would never come close to making anything that could ever hold a candle to “Eyelid Movies.” It feels good to be wrong sometimes… this is one of those moments.

Download: Cults Featuring Freddie Gibbs – “Bad Things”

CultsOutside of J. Nolan there hasn’t been another rapper I’ve name dropped in as many conversations about the future of Hip-Hop as Freddie Gibbs. The guy is the best of the best and still floating under the radar. Cults bringing him on board for this song takes the whole Washed Out/Nas mashup to an entire new cross genre level. I expect to hear this one remixed a couple thousand times in the months to come.

.

.

Download: Death In The Afternoon – “Oh Youth!”

Death In The Afternoon

Oh Youth!” is an ambient New Wave track that consistently floats in the background around my apartment, it’s an ideal companion for doing just about anything.

.

.

.

Download: Amanda Mair – “Doubt”

Amanda Mair

Doubt” belongs on the Footloose soundtrack (original or remake take your pick). It’s 80′s montage perfection. John Hughes could have put this one to some real use.

.

.

.

.

Download: Emil And Friends – “Crystal Ball”

Emil And Friends

This song came out in October and is my first experience with Emil And Friends. “Crystal Ball” is synth work at its finest.

.

.

.

Download: Coolrunnings – “The Fool”

Coolrunnings

I downloaded a handful of tracks from these guys out of Knoxville and on first listen wasn’t that impressed. Not that I didn’t think their music was good it just didn’t stand out to me. I’ve noticed them popping up more and more frequently over the last month and a half on blogs I respect causing me to reevaluate my initial impression off Coolrunnings. So last weekend I sat down and gave them a second chance, I wonder how many other bands I’ve written off when shuffling through new songs that are actually really good, I bet there has been a lot.

.

.

Download: Pictureplane – “Post Physical”

Pictureplane

Travis Egedy creates some damn good mixtape music. “Post Physical” has made it on nearly every mix I’ve made up for friends as of late, this song speaks for itself as to why.

.

.

.

Download: Cut Copy – “So Haunted”

Cut CopyMelbourne‘s Cut Copy have been make huge waves in the mid-west psyche over the last few years. It’s hard to pinpoint what it is about these guys that makes those of us half-way around the world attach with such magnetism other than it’s just really solid music that works well to sing along and tap your feet with. What other reason do we need?

“Trapped in time. Surrounded by evil. Low on gas.”…or the art of making the perfect mix for cruising at night

27 May

There is nothing i enjoy more than meeting up with friends at dusk and heading out on a late night drive through the country.  Conversations are better, time feels like it doesn’t  exist, the world feels like it’s full of possibilities, and the stress of day to day monotony are forgotten completely. It’s the only place i truly feel free, where i finally believe that anything can happen, where my friends and I strip away  all pretensions and  feel truly alive.

Before heading out there are a few necessities that must never be overlooked; Redbull (or your choice of energy drink), Nicotine (pick your poison), something for the munchies, something to pass around (i’m not condoning or promoting but from personal experience having something….um… light-able(?)….. guarantees a solid cruise to go from being just something to pass the time to epic), and the all coveted “cruising mix”.  I have hundreds of mixes that i’ve refused to discard even though at least three tracks on each disc are unlistenable due to scratches from floating around on the floorboard of my car. Each of those discs has it’s own story, it’s own memory , and all i’ve got to do is slip it in and turn the volume up and have that precise night come flooding back to me.

The problem with putting a mix like this up is that the unknowns which go into a perfectly made mix cannot be accounted for, i’ll never be able to bring in that intimacy through a high speed connection.  You have to know who will be with you and what they are currently digging, which bands are overrated to them, which ones are underrated, genres they don’t respect, pop songs that they secretly enjoy, and most importantly you need to know when it comes down to that final drag of the ride when all words fall silent and your heading back home, minds in quiet contentment, that the songs playing are going to truly encapsulate a feeling between the group of you at that exact moment. This is not always easy to do. Inevitably there will always be at least one person who is foreign to the group and who probably doesn’t enjoy anything outside of corporate mainstream radio and you have to make sure that songs make the mix which they will appreciate because if one person isn’t enjoying themselves it doesn’t take much for them to upset the vibe between everyone else.

There are three parts to a night cruise. There’s the departure; everyone in good spirits high in everyday conversation and only needing the mix to send of a solid vibe to set the tone for the entire journey without being too weighed down not to allow it to slip off into the ether. The settling in; this is where the music works more as a guide, both for conversations and for emotions. I usually use this part of the mix to bring up songs that we haven’t heard in a while, songs that we may normal be “too cool” for but given the right opportunity with a couple good friends they can be great tracks to sing along with. And then the third being the introspective part of the drive where conversations become more personal and where you have the unique chance to take a look inside yourself as a collective. The third part also being where at least one person inevitably falls asleep. When looking back on past nights out it’s amazing how much the bond as friends becomes strengthened  and on more occassions than i can count how many crushes and friendships have moved on to something more tangible all from the right songs and where you end up sitting along the way.

Although this mix could feasably be something i would immedietely burn up and take out tonight it’s also only a guideline. an example of a good way to go about planning a night journey through the country. Hopefully a few of these songs will make it onto your own mix before heading out with friends.

winterishly trapped

7 Feb

Since it seems the entire midwest is trapped under an old testament act of god, here’s what’s helping me stop myself from accomplishing anything remotely productive.

1.Eric &MaGill- Old Man Winter

Michigan’s history of bands that  perfectly craft captivating minimalistic ambiant hyms is more than enough reason to give Eric and Magill a try, they far from disappoint. Plus Tim Showalter’s been pushing these guys like it’s his job (and for good reason)

2. Ben Weaver-East Jefferson

For some r eason every time this song comes on i immediately imagine myself coming home late at night with a car full of sleeping friends from some epic road trip. Which makes this song more than fitting for today’s playlist…words can’t describe how much i’d rather be on a summer road trip with friends instead of knowing there’s nearly a foot of suck just outside my window.

Ben Weaver- East Jefferson

3.The Love Language- Providence

It seems that people say one of two things when i bring up the love language: The first being that Libraries was one of the best albums to come out last year (made number one on my list) or the second being that they haven’t heard of them which usually prompts me to offer them twenty dollars to burn their nickleback shirts and to try out some real music for once (the second isn’t really true because if i were to see someone in a nickleback shirt I can only imagine i’d be more likely to pray for them than to strike up a conversation about music)

The love Language- Providence

4.Matthew and the atlas- I will remain

It amazes me these guys are still floating under the radar.  The North EP is short and perfectly sweet.  They are on my must see live list for this year.

Matthew and the atlas- i will remain

5.  The head and the heart-winter song

The Head and the heart are my favorite band out . I can’t get enough of their songs. They just signed with sub pop about a month ago which basically means they’re about to conquer the world. They’ll be here in Indy with Iron and Wine in april (um YESSS!!!!)

The head and the heart-winter song

6.Wild Nothing- Live in dreams

I was listening to High Highs’ version of this song for a couple of months before i even heard the original, at first i wasn’t sure which i liked better but the original definitely draws out a rawer emotion than high highs. I’m sure if i’d listened to Wild Nothing sooner i wouldn’t even be bringing up the high highs version but there will always be a special place in my heart for any cover song that effectively shifts the overall feel of a song.

Wild Nothing- Live in dreams

high highs- live in dreams (wild nothing cover)

7.Sun Airway-put the days away

Sun Airway is another band that’s been stuck in rotation on my ipod. And every time i become passive to one of these guys’ songs another one comes up for me to fall in love with. my addiction has gone in the order as follows oh, naoko-waiting on you-put the days away

Sun Airway-put the days away

8.Dale Earnhardt jr. jr- Vocal Chords (Diego And The Dissidents Remix)

Does anyone remember those dinosaurs we had as kids that were really tiny pieces of somewhat rubber and then you’d put them in a sink full of water and they’d grow more and more each day, i actually had trouble sleeping once as a kid because i thought it was going to grow to such a size that it wouldn’t fit in my bathroom anymore and then would probably become a real life blue triceratops that i could take with me on  “bring your pet to school day” in the second grade. Although i never ended up with my own blue dinosaur Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. are like that for me and if i had to put my finger on this version is kind of like the water.

Dale Earnhardt jr. jr- Vocal Chords (Diego And The Dissidents Remix)

9. wolf gang- lions in cages

10.Cut Copy- Take me over

11.Jamaica- I think i like u 2

It seems like every blog I’ve come across has been completely infatuated by jamaica. I didn’t care for their band name so i didn’t give them a chance last year. i know it’s one of the lamest reasons not to listen to a band but occasionally i succumb to it. I should have learned my lesson after Margot was already signed before i gave them a chance. Which was a huge loss for me seeing how they haven’t made an album i’ve appreciated since dust of retreat [which is hands down one of the best albums made in my lifetime] . In my defense i wasn’t twenty one when they were playing the local scene so outside of the occasional nuvo article praising them as the greatest thing to happen in indy since Ryan Adams was spotted at the bagel Deli i was underexposed.

Jamaica- I think i like u 2

12. Lost in the Trees- Fireplace

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rI0PfMdog8w

Lost in the trees are basically what saves the day would have sounded like had they evolved.

Lost in the Trees- Fireplace

13.The Go! Team- Voice yr choice

14.Conrad Plymouth-Fergus Falls

Another solo artist creating amazing music after helping create amazing music just in a different way (?!?) and just like Bon Iver he was once part of megafaun and although Bon Iver seems to create just as much good in either outlet Conrad Plymouth’s strength is on his own. Which makes it a trifecta win for all of us who’ve been paying attention.

Conrad Plymouth-Fergus Falls

15.Strand Of Oaks- Bonfire

Strand of oaks  will be here soon (@ the bishop) with Joe Pug which promises to be a great(capital G)  show!

Strand Of Oaks- Bonfire

16.Arcade Fire- SprawlII (mountains beyond mountains)

Just when i think i’m ready to throw this album on the shelf i find myself addicted to another track. As of late it’s sprawlII partially because i can’t get enough of regine’s voice which is always used too sparingly on their albums and partially because of whenever they do have her sing it puts their music in a whole different genre.either way the lyrics are arcade fireishly perfect (as always).

Arcade fire- Sprawl II (mountains beyond mountains

17.Beat Radio- The World is Ours

18. LCD Soundsystem – All My Friends

So For a while there i felt like i no longer was into lcd. Then out of nowhere i got hooked again. I know this song is years old but it’s new to me and the lyrics are perfectly fitting for where i’m at in life.

LCD Soundsystem – All My Friends

19. Chairs in the Arno- Winter Song

I heard about these guys maybe three years ago and have heard absolutely nothing else since a friend put them on a mix for me, meh it happens, Still this is what i’m thinking about with the holy cussing snowsuck outside so i’m putting it on todays playlist.

Chairs in the Arno- Winter Song
