HCK! Turns 2 … Our 100th mixtape!

28 Mar

Remember Me

It’s hard to believe but it’s been over two years since HCK!’s first offering. We’ve come a long way, the growth is apparent, looking back at those first posts is a rad experience realizing just how tangible of a difference between then and now there is and how many people have helped to make this one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. This also marks the 100th post for HCK! making today’s mix all that more important for me to get right. Continue reading

Heycoolkid!’s Best Albums Of 2011

17 Dec

If you haven’t been downright impressed with the overflow of incredible genre crossing music this year you are either a huge Nickleback fan or you are Amish, there’s no other logical excuse to complain about the status of music.

Last year when I put the “Best Albums” list together it was one of the first Heycoolkid! posts ever and with all honesty I was ill-prepared. This year I’m putting these albums up with complete confidence. Sure there’s an album or two that should have the made the cut and somehow was overlooked but all excuses aside here are the albums which I thought were the best of 2011:

Some Other Beginnings End

13 Dec

So it looks like I am FINALLY moving to Austin!

If things even remotely go close to plan I’ll be out of the cold and out of this city by March 1st. Emotions are mixed as they always are when leaving one place behind to face something completely unknown but I’m a major advocate for change and more-so pro anti-regrets.

To everyone that’s made Broad Ripple truly feel like home I owe a huge thank you for helping the last six years be full of memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life, it’s time for a new beginning, it’s time to find myself.

The downside of Indiana has always been it’s admiration towards settling. It hurts me to see everyone so content without ever truly living there lives, perpetuating a consumer culture that sickens me, not even attempting to find themselves or understand who they are or the world they choose to take no part in. Although it’s hard leaving close friends and family behind it would be much harder to watch the rest of my life pass me by without experiencing those things I dream of when I’m awake and have held me with one foot out of the door for my entire life.

Since there’s never been a moment I haven’t felt the need to make a playlist for this obviously goes without exception. I’ll have another mixtape up for the drive out but these are the songs that came to mind immediately when I made the decision of fully committing to leaving the sorrowful midwest behind.

The Soirée – “Enemies”

Fair Fjola – “Settle”

French Films – “This Dead Town”

Cloud Nothings – “Stay Useless”

Future Islands – “Give Us The Wind”

Real Estate – “Out Of Tune”

Bishop Allen – “Things Are What You Make Of Them”

REM – “Leaving New York”

Pete Droge – “Going Whichever Way The Wind Blows”

Cat Stevens – “Wind”

The Milk Carton Kids – “Michigan”

The Head And The Heart – “Rivers And Roads”

Jimmy Eat World – “My Sundown”

The Avett Brothers – “Head Full Of Doubt/Road Full Of Promises”

Death Cab For Cutie – “You Are A Tourist”

The Gaslight Anthem – “Stay Lucky”

The Ataris – “So Long, Astoria”

Paul Baribeau – “Ten Things”

****Bonus*****

Bon Iver – “Beth/Rest (Solo Piano Version)”

This one doesn’t exactly fit with the ethos of this weeks playlist but I mentioned this song the other night in conversation and said I’d put it up on my next post for them to check out.

The Frost Set In And Made Me Feel At Home

17 Nov

Download: Fair Fjola – “Summer Song”

If you are making a mixtape  I dare you to find a better side-one track-one than “Summer Song!” I heard Fair Fjola‘s “No One Gets Any” for the first time early Monday morning and it’s pretty much all I’ve listened to since. As a matter of fact it’s so good when I was looking over this mix I had eight songs from them on deck to be added. I have a feeling this collective out of Warsaw,IN will be spreading like wildfire in the very near future. This is probably the best song to introduce Fair Fjola to you.

.

.

Download: New Navy – “Tapioca”

New Navy‘s “Tapioca” is a catchy mix of ambient lead and what feels like one seamless three minute hook. These guys are a band out of Sydney who have been building quite a buzz over the last year . Read more about them here.

.

.

.Download: Longwave – “The Devil And The Lair”

Longwave‘s been part of my life for nearly ten years now. When I lived on the east coast everyone knew who they were but here in the midwest they seem to be nearly unknown amongst the scene psyche, it’s strange how much great music remains confined by geographic limitations, it’s a sad reality that is happening less and less but for bands in the late nineties that chose not to conform to the mainstream/Clear-channel mold it was the biggest obstacle for them to overcome. I recently featured a track from Hurricane Bells which is now the main focus of Longwave‘s founder Steve Schiltz, which not only is great music in its own right it also proves without a doubt that the guy is still capable of creating amazing music

.

.

Download: Lord Huron – “She Lit A Fire (Rollo And Grady Session)”

Don’t let the folky americana instrumentation fool you, the swelling vocals have a purely sixties soul that channels some of the great great blues singers and that is the lifeblood of this band. My only fear is that people will automatically want to categorize Lord Heron next to Fleet Foxes, not that it would be terrible thing but there is a lot more potential here than with the slightly overrated Fleet Foxes. No offense to FF fans, I have always enjoyed their music I just think they are a band whose premature elevation may have caused them to peak far sooner than they would have had they been given four more years to develop a bit less one-sided sound. (I feel the same way about Mumford And Sons) Check the footage from this live take over here.

Download: TV Ghost – “Doppleganger”

I am one hundred percent geeked out about TV Ghost. They are out of Lafayette and play shows around town often yet I’ve somehow missed every show they’ve been on the bill for. I’m not even sure how I got my hands on this track but from the second it came on I was stoked beyond belief. There have been an unlimited amount of bands who have tried getting this sound right but none of them have come close to doing it justice the way that TV Ghost do. Each time I listen to “Doppleganger” I feel like I’m having sex on a spaceship while watching a Charles Manson documentary after free basing twelve shots of espresso… Fact.

.

.

Download: The Mae Shi – “PWND”

I was trying to explain TV Ghost to a friend last week and the only comparison I could come up with immediately was think a surfed out Cap’n Jazz mixed with The Mae Shi… he had no idea what I was talking about, often times I don’t either. Since I look for any excuse possible to listen to The Mae Shi here is “PWND” from 2008′s “HLLYH”

.

.

Download: Fort Lean – “Beach Holiday”

I heard this song over the summer and no one in the car knew who the hell it was. Some mix cd with no track list, it’s been driving me crazy ever since. I stumbled over it on Electric Panda last week…thank god for the internet… I should have known they were from Brooklyn.

.

.

Download:  Stoner Showers – “Give Me A Chance”

Give Me A Chance“  by Hawaii’s Stoner Showers sounds like some eighties synth take on Panda Bear. I really dig how precise everything is as opposed to muddy like other similar songs in the whole chillwave genre. I feel like Stoner Showers are pushing things in a more spaced out direction than hiding behind the noise which is a direction few artists have had the balls to do this year. Don’t rock the boat right? If the music’s good then it shouldn’t matter, “Give Me A Chance” is really good.

.

.

Download: Wise Blood – “Solo”

.

I’m always  keeping my ear out for new Wise Blood tracks. “Solo” came to me by way of a free fall compilation that Dovecoat Records gave out a few weeks ago. “Solo” is just another reminder that I can not wait for a new Christopher Laufman full length!
