SXSW 2014 | Best Of | Mozes and The Firstborn

19 Mar

Mozes And The Firstborn - SXSW 2014 - Bar 96 #1So where to begin on SXSW 2014? Despite the official showcases being dishearteningly less than incredible this year, the town being whitewashed with major corporate sponsorships, an over abundance of hip-hop sets in a town built on garage psyche and Willy Nelson, somehow this managed to surpass the level of stoked I have felt over previous years and those who have followed HCK! for any amount of time knows how impossible that seemed.

HCK! Turns 2 … Our 100th mixtape!

28 Mar

Remember Me

It’s hard to believe but it’s been over two years since HCK!’s first offering. We’ve come a long way, the growth is apparent, looking back at those first posts is a rad experience realizing just how tangible of a difference between then and now there is and how many people have helped to make this one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. This also marks the 100th post for HCK! making today’s mix all that more important for me to get right. Continue reading

Is This Love That I’m Feeling: Valentine’s Day Mixtape 2013

George Constanza Looking Sexy In Underwear

My original plan was to put up twelve songs worthy of a Valentine’s Mix … I have narrowed it down to 32, hope you dig and hopefully there’s someone in your life worth sharing these with, if not check back on HCK! in a few hours, there is another mix on the way for you and I to share. The Definitive(ish) Hooded Sweatshirt Mixtape: 2012

11 Oct

It goes without saying that the fall mixtape is my favorite of the year. I’ve spent the last two weeks narrowing this down to what hopefully will be as rad to hear on your end as it is each time I listen through it on mine.

Getting the closest friends, setting your destination for the middle of nowhere and pressing play, that’s the thought in mind of what kind of mix this should be, hopefully it lives up to all that a late-night hooded-sweatshirt drive calls for.

Orca Orca – “Say So” - mp3

Orca Orca - Heycoolkid.net

Just when I thought I might actually make it a full month without putting up an Orca Orca song Jim Hewett went and released “Say So.”

Comforting yet important, spacious but deep, might as well call it “Experiencing An Oxymoron” instead.

While “Say So” is playing I really want to come outright and say it is the best song on this weeks mix, as well as my favorite, unfortunately I can’t say that for sure, I’m pretty stoked to be closing out March with such a solid playlist, still without ranking it is more than worthy of a side-one track-one status on this weeks mixtape.

Endless Loop – “Across The Atlantic”mp3

Endless loop - Heycoolkid.net

In February of 2011, on one of the first Heycoolkid! posts ever (Winterishly Trapped),  I included a track from the band Chairs In The Arno, at the time it had been years since I’d heard anything from them and mentioned the hiatus in the review, turns out it wasn’t just a hiatus but instead the band had succumbed, as so many bands do, to life and parted ways.

So randomly last week I received an email mentioning the former bass-player for Chairs In The ArnoJeff Knight‘s new project Endless Loop.

There are four Endless Loop songs getting steadily played on my ipod this week. There was a novelty to CITA that attracted me to them, novelty is fleeting and there is no remnant of it on any Endless Loop song, instead you’ll find charisma wrapped in an electro-pop blanket of understated confidence.

My favorite element within the Endless Loop sound is Samantha Hughes and her ideal vocals. “Across The Atlanta” is the perfect example where each time she joins in with Knight’s singing the two voices combine making things feel spot on, as if they were meant for the other’s.

More than likely I’ll be putting up some other songs from these two in the near future.

Here is that Chairs In The Arno track so you can contrast and compare.

Health – “Goth Star (Pictureplane Cover)” - mp3

Health - Heycoolkid.net

I may actually enjoy this cover more than the original. I’ve dug Pictureplane for some time so that isn’t meant to take anything away from what he does,  Health just know how to draw certain feelings from a song better than any other artist in the genre.

That guitar use is a straight forward way of setting the entire songs vibe which gets sealed completely by the Fleetwood Mac samples which destroy with angelic fierceness.

For some reason whenever I play this song I picture the Gleaming The Cube warehouse skating scene in my head (I watched Gleaming The Cube and Friday the 13th part six on repeat as a kid, which is not an exaggeration. Most kids had Disney movies, I had Christian Slater with Tony Hawk and Jason Voorhees soundtracked by Alice Cooper collaborating with Kenny Loggins).

—- Okay so I just pulled up the clip from Gleaming The Cube and figured out that if you start the song just between :12 and :13 and start the clip without sound, every time the deck hits the ground it goes with the beat… I know I’m probably the only person on the planet who cares about that combination but if you could have seen the little move I made when I got them aligned you might come close to understanding how much enjoyment I found at four in the morning by aligning the two together (think professional bowler after getting a winning strike, that whole elbow into the side reverse fist pump disgruntled “yeah” face thing they do… just happened)—-

V A L I S – “Cold Hands” - mp3

V A L I S - Heycoolkid.net

Picture your favorite scary movie from the 80’s, now think of the one scene that you remember being both awesome and creepy at the same time, now imagine “Cold Hands” from V A L I S playing, tell me they don’t fit PERFECTLY together. The one movie above all others where this song would have absolutely killed in…. The Lost Boys ( another glorious movies that helped define my childhood).

V A L I S  are out of Chicago and it is nearly impossible to find anything out about the electronic new comers (in part due to an extremely shitty band called Valis…there is nothing worse than old dudes who think they are making “rock” music, these are the same guys that throw the “rock” hand sign in every lame picture they take, you know what I’m talking about, and then the second being that three times in there bio it mentions that one of the members was once in Screaming Trees and then in the last paragraph it says “Say what you will about VALIS… Just as long as you can do it without using the words “trees” or “screaming” because Van Conner has stepped out of the shadows and landed front and center in what can only be described as a total reinvention of self,” don’t name drop your ex-[and much better]band and then talk trash about comparing the dude to them.

Sorry for the digression back to V A L I S the gnarly industrial/techno duo.

If you dig this song then take the time to follow the Soundcloud link below and check out some of their other stuff there, especially “Cobra” which is one hell of a song sampled around the Sylvester Stallone movie with the same title; if you’ve ever had a hangover on a Sunday there is a good chance you’ve seen it a few times like myself.

The Dø – “Too Insistent (Trentemoeller Remix)” - mp3

Trentemøeller - Heycoolkid.net

The number of friends who have that random clinging person who I wish I could just send this song out to are many.

The strength lies in the work Trentemøeller‘s put in allowing an escape from the lyrics themselves causing  “Too Insistent”  never to have a chance at balancing out, things consistently changing to give numerous angles on the singular message.

Dr. Dog – “Lonesome” - mp3

Dr. Dog - Heycoolkid.net

This song came out back in January, it takes a close second to “Shadow People” in my favorite Dr. Dog track list.

Lonesome” is one more example of that mid-seventies sound that for two years now I have been saying is soon to be dominating the scene.

“What does it take to be lonesome? … Nothing at all.” Ahhhhhhhh get it?

1860 – “For You, Forever” - mp3

1860 - Heycoolkid.net

1860 are an Icelandic band with a folk backbone and pop mindset. “For You, Forever” is a start to finish hold-hands and sing-along track meant for crush mixtapes and subtle playlist for co-ed drives.

I love that these guys do half of their songs in English and the other half in Icelandic which makes for a very enjoyable listen with their combination of confident steady lyrics and borderline swooning vocals. (Via)

Strange Fur – “Couldn’t Wait” - mp3

Strange Fur

I featured “Riptides” from Strange Fur on the  I Saw The Best Minds Of My Generation Choking On Birthday Cake post. “Couldn’t Wait” is a very similar song, although with slightly more upbeat instrumentation, with lyrics of concentrated remembrance of better times shared with someone else.

The direct one-on-one focus to their songs is the one tangent of Strange Fur‘s music that appeals to me more than any other aspect within their creativity.

The Parade Schedule – “Thousand Oceans” - mp3

The Parade Schedule

More than any other band I’ve found in 2012 none have made me feel anywhere near as comfortable as The Parade Schedule.  There is some unspoken undertone to Matt Kinder, a longing sadness of some sort yet deeper, for some reason I have instantly attached to it and more-so can relate with.

His fearlessness to weave his faith into his lyrics is of utmost importance to me and it pains me that so many other artists lack the courage to express who they are fully through their art. The Parade Schedule is genuine and I dig it.

Bonus:  The Parade Schedule – “By And By” - mp3

I’m not sure what it is about “By And By” that I love so much but I do enjoy this track immensely. The first time I heard it I kept picturing the scene in The Go-Getter (oh my love for The Go-Getter!) when Lou Taylor Pucci is helping his brother’s ex-girlfriend with community service by singing hymns to young kids, it’s one of my favorite movies and I realize these two have no real relation but that was the image playing in my mind, “By And By”  may now be my favorite from The Parade Schedule.

Caleb McCoach – “Towers Of Our Heart (Live)” - mp3

Caleb McCoach - Heycoolkid.net

I recorded this just before leaving Indiana and have listened to it a good twenty times, I hope you listen intently so as not to miss the sense of awe that came over the crowd as “Towers Of  Our Heart”  developed.

This is the song Caleb McCoach opened his set with, I first heard it last fall at Broad Ripple Music Fest and have been eager to hear once again ever since, BRMF was also the first time I’d seen him joined on stage by the ever-so-talented Lisa Berlin on the keys.

Having caught him live so many times over the last few years I can say that the difference of having Lisa play along has not only helped transfer his sound in a completely new direction, there is also a calm that is apparent which she brings to the stage, seeming to ease the nervousness that before played an element of contrast to the music he performed. Oddly what that nervousness has been replaced by is a guy who is finally as massive as his lyrics have always been.

Caleb McCoach is easily one of the greatest songwriters living today and now he has a presence when performing that accentuates it. For a while I was afraid that Caleb would begin drifting off into that void of life so many artist dissipate into, it’s beginning to be clear that something more important is happening, a transformation, it is unbelievable to feel the change. His lyrics have always given me chills yet to be there and see a loud room transfer into wide eyes with open jaws mouthing “WOW” to each other felt epic, like stumbling into Cafe Wha? in the early 60’s .

Take everything you love about  Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and possibly even Tom Waits (depending on which direction he eventually goes in) and I guarantee you Caleb McCoach fits right in beside them as an equal. He is one of the last remaining songwriting gunslingers, we need someone like him in music now more than ever.

He’s supposed to have a new EP coming sometime in the near future, I cannot wait to own it.

Howth – “Out In Eagan” - mp3

Howth Newkirk - Heycoolkid.net

Finally some new music from the group that gave us one of the best songs of 2011 “Belly Of The Beast.”

Howth are a developing band out of Brooklyn who are one of those rare collectives to walk the fine line between solid controlled instrumentation and deep heavy lyricism.

Initially “Out In Eagan” is my favorite song from Newkirk which will be available on May 1st (you can stream it now through their Bandcamp link), although with such a strong effort I have a feeling once I’ve listened through it a few more times something else will take it’s place.

Bryan John Appleby – “The Words Of The Revelator” - mp3

Bryan John Appleby - Heycoolkid.net

Bryan John Appleby has created one of the more organic songs I’ve heard lately, with it’s uncanny ability to drive rhythm upon rhythm that makes this song chug along with importance. “The Words Of The Revelator” is as much a necessity to see performed live as it is to throw on a mix to get your body moving in that uniform “yeah” motion.

Boyhood Bravery – “Like Vines” - mp3

Boyhood Bravery - Heycoolkid.net

Like Vines” is more poetry than anything else.  Joseph Williams using his Boyhood Bravery moniker puts out introspective sketches that are so well written that they make the stripped down nature to his recordings sound necessary.

i wore 3D glasses and i stared into your eyes
you said “the stars look pretty plain tonight”
and i racked my brain right there and then
to try to find a solution
to ‘when exactly did i start to bore you first?’
was it the first time i mis-quoted Bronte?
(and by the way, she still bores me)
or was it the ill-fated night of candle-wax?
either way i knew back then,
as the spectrum bled into a familiar colour,
you’d found another.

i could write about the first time that i lay there in your bedroom
i could write about the first time we were clay
and we both moulded our bodies
intertwined like vines on a National Trust building;
but it wouldn’t change that things ended this way
with you hating me just for liking you
more than a friend should do.

take a look at all that happened;
i bet it isnt how you dreamed it would be
i still have your ring hidden somewhere
i still remember everything.

Caves – “Eleven Twenty” - mp3

Caves-Optimized

With Youth Lagoon like creative brilliance and a sound aligned with Nerves Junion, eighteen year old Luca Cage looks to have masses of hype going his way in 2012.

Everything about this song is worth putting on repeat from the sweet horn sounds and the funk like groove to how the vocals feel as if we are hearing them from a jukebox across a smoke thick pool hall filled of bad people with bad intentions.

It’s not much of a stretch saying there is huge potential for Caves in the future psyche of our indie music landscape. – (via)

Cloud Nothings – “Forget You All The Time” - mp3

So the  Cloud Nothings  show last weekend was the first since moving to Austin I had been overtly stoked for and I overslept. Getting super tired at like 2 in the afternoon, and being a lifelong fan of naps, thought it a good idea to lay down for a few minutes. Fast forward seven and a half hours and I was still sound asleep. I really want to catch Cloud Nothings in the wild sometime soon. This song is a sort of atonement for my mistake.

Forget You All The Time” was the first song that completely sold me on Dylan Baldi. It captures every aspect of the music I grew up on without sounding  contrived.

Sun Buffalo – “Ghost Part II” - mp3

Sun Buffalo-Optimized

I’m new to Sun Buffalo so not much I can tell you. There isn’t anything about them worth repeating on their facebook page or through any outlet I’ve looked to other than they are a 3 piece out of Maryland, luckily they have a few free albums to grab on bandcamp so we can both get to know them a little better through the music.

As far as electric-guitar goes this is the sound I love the most; simple yet intricate, sparse yet fitting, kind of reminds me of early The Junior Varsity but more chill.

Cousin Brian – “Fear Instilled” - mp3

Fear Instilled” is a prime example of everything that has been great about the resurgence of 90’s garage rock with that rad low-fi touch we have all come to appreciate.

Cousin Brian are out of Philly and still relatively unknown. It may be a few minutes before people catch on to this noise but take my word for it, there are some solid early summer must-haves coming from these guys.

Agent A caught my attention last year with his work with Omae which were some of the best tracks 2011 had to offer, most notably being “Breathing 2007” which came in at #14 on my Best Of 2011 list.

This dude is absolutely solid in everything he touches. From that instantly infectious beat he keys out with ease to the limited but ideally placed lyrics this is about as good as laptop-pop can get.

Baltinore – “Strangers From The Light” - mp3

[Picture Unavailable]

I dug this 80’s track up over the weekend when putting a mix together to go along with a couple of Wealth tracks I was sending over to a friend who mentioned looking for similar songs to what is on the Drive soundtrack.

I completely forgot how much I love this song.  Baltinore weren’t by any means groundbreaking but still there is a valid relation between what they were doing in ’85 with what is flooding the indie scene lately.

Pickwick – “Hacienda Motel (Live On KEXP)”mp3

In all honesty I’ve been on the fence with Pickwick;  not that I have anything against their music it just hasn’t connected with me all that much before. Small Faces – “You Need Loving - mp3

Since moving to Austin this has been the style of music I’m getting more and more into daily. Small Faces and similar bands are the major reason for the delay in today’s mix since I’ve been spending as much time educating myself on all of the incredible music I’ve been neglecting for so long since devoting all of my time focusing on new bands and new music. Reptar – “Sebastian” - mp3

Still to this day Vagrant is one of my favorite labels. They put out a consistent stream of solid bands (and yes my love-fest started with Dashboard Confessional; I’ll stand by Carrabba’s music for the rest of my life no-matter how uncool it makes me in certain pretentious self-righteous circles, even friends whose opinions I respect give me shit for it but DC is in my top 5 hands down… ah get)

Anyways back to Reptar and the feel good, cheer the hell up and sing along song “Sebastian“. This is one of those you can’t help but look forward to sharing with a hundred other sweaty kids. So much fun with an energetic laid back vibe, kind of what I expected would be coming from Tokyo Police Club (that is if TPC weren’t putting out shitty Kelly Clarkson and Miley Cyrus covers and put some real music out again, it is long  overdue).

Cold Limitations And Fictions

25 Jan

Things are starting to get a little hectic. Between the trying to get everything prepared for a cross-country move and the fact that I work in a bar in a city that’s about to host the Super Bowl causing me to have one day off in the next two weeks has me more than a little upset with myself about all things Heycoolkid, especially since  this site is the release I look forward to each week.

Today’s mix includes a few more songs than usual that have been out for some time, it’s fine though it turns out that without the new-song smell some tracks are still worth listening too (are you taking notes hipsters?). If you’re looking for more new music it should be a strong couple weeks around here, I’ve already got the next two posts slated and they have a much more fresh out of the laundry scent.

Clean My Heart From All The Rust That Stayed

27 Oct

For those of you who live in Indy, how great has the music been in this town over the last few weeks? I’m having issues with my camera’s memory card which, thanks to a little help from Amazon I think it should be resolved mid next week. I can’t believe the last time I posted pictures was from The Head And The Heart‘s first trip through town. I’ll save the details once I’ve got more evidence but here’s who I’ve recently seen play.

Yuck, Bear Hands, Pomegranates, Cymbals Eat Guitars, Washed Out, Caleb McCoach, Porcelain Raft, Thunderhawks, Ruby Radio Love, Hooray For Earth, Household Guns, and Vacation Club. Now that’s a good month! It deserves noting once again that Dodge and the My Old Kentuck Blog team have been the catalysts for what is actually becoming a substantial town for music so if you’re local make sure you follow what they are doing over there at MOKB and if you get a chance say thanks and buy the guys a beer, they definitely deserve it.

So here we go:

.

.

Download:  Feed Me – “Pink Lady”

I have no idea what that opening is, probably ten seconds on google and I’d have all the details but I prefer to remain in the dark about it since it sets the song up so well, gives it a bit of an edge. I know Feed Me has been doing this for a long while and been heavy on the blog radar since last December but I’ve only been listening to John Gooch for a little over a week. Not sure how that happened but since I’ve been in dire need of some new dubstep Feed Me couldn’t have come along at a better time. Speaking of, I will probably have the new Skillex/Kaskade track up within a week, actually never mind I’ll go ahead and put it up.

.

.Kaskade + Skrillex – “Lick It”

The only reason I had for wanting to put this up next week is that I haven’t taken the effort to (uh) borrow it yet but why not just stream it like everyone else whose put it up yet.  Usually I see eye to eye with Frank from Listen Before You Buy. Nearly every band he puts up I completely agree with his tastes. The only two exceptions are Radiohead and Skrillex. I think Sonny is one of the most interesting people in music, period,  and what he’s done for bringing energy back into a genre that was losing steam is practically unbelievable. Just like his days with From First To Last some people just flat out despise the guy. So when it comes to Skrillex you can understand why Frank and I have come to an impasse’.  I dig the song, as long as electronic music is your thing I think you will too.

.

.

Download : Architecture In Helsinki – “Contact High (Javelin Remix)”

The Australians continue creating instantly addictive songs. Architecture In Helsinki are like a less intense Starfucker. The key work Javelin has thrown in on this one makes “Contact High” a much more vibe-able song.

.

.

.

.

Download : Three Trapped Tigers – “1”

I feel like it’s been a while since I’ve listened to an instrumental and felt convicted enough to add it into the mix. “1” is more than worth going against the heycoolkid! status quo. This song’s been out for a while but as with Feed Me I very recently heard it for the first time. How gnarly is the breakdown at 2:15? When that bass line comes in is when things start getting real, it reminds me a lot of Impure Jazz.

.

.

.

Download : Teenagers – “Let’s Take a Ride”

Once again I bring you Teenagers.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

Download : French Films – “This Dead Town”

“Every day I’m waiting for

The airport bars and the fading shores

That stayed when nothing ever change

That’s how you open a song!

.Download : Real Estate – “Barely Legal”

If I’d been born maybe four years sooner I would probably be a bigger Strokes fan. I think they are solid but I have no real attachment to them since I only saw the hype and Ascension  from a distance. Real Estate though is a band I’m completely gay for at the moment. So not being familiar with the original, “Barely Legal” sounds like indie perfection. I’d be interested to hear how Strokes fans feel about this version though.

.

.

.

Download : Dan Mangan – “Rows Of Houses”

All I can say about Heycoolkid! favorite Dan Mangans new album is… IT IS ABOUT DAMN TIME!

Download: Bear Hands – “Crime Pays”

Last week I had a chance to see Vacation Club, Pomegranates, and Bear Hands play at Radio Radio. Let’s talk about a great show! I went there for Pomegranates and left in love with Bear Hands. Before I get away from Pomegranates they deserve some recognition for melting the bars face during their set. I caught them at Locals Only last winter, maybe two years ago, which was a great show but the transition from a shoe-gazy live show to this ball of energy caught me completely off guard and I loved every second of it. If we’re being honest here then it needs to be said that my expectations for Bear Hands were not high, I truly thought there would be no way for them to follow Pomegranates without coming across as flat… I was wrong… really really wrong. They owned Radio Radio for forty-five minutes, it was incredible.

Download : Radical Face – “A Pound Of Flesh”

One of the greatest instrumentals ever is Radical Face‘s “Asleep On A Train“. Each time it comes up on a mix I instantly put myself at the beginning of Kerouc‘s “Lonesome Traveler” and completely disappear to better yet heavier time and place. I mean that song just weighs your heart down with that uneasy lack of clarity sort of feeling that comes with deep thoughts late at night when unsure of the future, it’s almost peaceful but not quite, it’s very self-involved. That being said I’m really surprised by how good “A Pound Of Flesh” is. I just hadn’t expected Ben Cooper to deliver on the lyrical/singing end of things the way he does with that instrumental, yet another reason preconceptions are often wrong and nearly as often it is a good thing.

Download : Netherfriends – “Me and My Ego (Nilsson Cover)”

If you have yet to see the Who Is Harry Nilsson (And Why Is Everyone Talking About Him) documentary I highly recommend clearing some time for the next week to do so. Before seeing it I was familiar with maybe two songs of his and wasn’t intrigued enough by them to explore deeper into the Nilsson catalog. That film definitely changed my interest completely. If you’ve wondered why Harry Nilsson covers have been popping up all over, that film is the major catalyst behind it. Netherfriends went all out this time around and instead of just doing one song Shawn Rosenblatt  made an entire Nilsson covers album which is fantastic and free. I will say as a huge Netherfriends fan I’m not really behind his whole touring and doing only Nilsson covers but it is his career and his form of expression and he’s obviously got to do whatever it is he feels passionate about. I just find it strange to put all of that focus and energy into being a one man tribute band, especially when Rosenblatt is so damn good when he does Rosenblatt songs. (I also am not sure if he’s only doing a few shows of Nilsson songs which is kind of cool or actually touring as he had hinted at a few weeks ago on the Netherfriends facebook page)

Download: Darwin Deez – “Up In The Clouds (Shoes Remix)”

I’m one hundred percent disappointed that “Radar Detector” comes on every night at the bar I work at. It’s reached the point where I’m having to make myself stay interested in Darwin Deez in general and remind myself that I too loved that song at one point in time, still want to really but can’t. This is a sweet little remix of “Up In The Clouds“. Shoes really put a nice touch to an already solid song.

Download : Black Coffee And Cherry Pie – “This Is Not A Dream”

The only negative I have about Black Coffee And Cherry Pie is how similar Albert Murienne’s music is to Ducktails. Not much of a negative is it? I’m fine with it.

Download : Ryan Adams – “Rescue Blues (Live)”

I try as hard as possible to reference other great sites that have helped me find incredible music.I feel like once a month I’m referencing I Am Fuel, You Are Friends. As far my opinion goes, Heather Browne is the best of the best when it comes to steering us towards all things great in indie. I can’t even begin to count how many bands I’ve fallen in love with that I first heard through her site. Sorry about the tangent but I’ve been wanting to put a little thank you somewhere on Heycoolkid! for some time now and this is my first solid opportunity.  She put this entire amazing (AMAZING!!!!) show up at the beginning of October. Last week I had three glorious days off in a row so I was able to sit down and finally relax and take the entire set in and I was blown away.

Ryan Adams, how much more impressed can I be by you? There has never been a live show that I’ve enjoyed listening to more than this one. It’s everything that is great about Adams right down to his random long winded ramblings that some find irritating but I find hilarious and enjoy. Click the link and download the entire thing, if you remotely like music you’re life will forever be better for having done so.

Download: Ryan Adams – “New York, New York (Live)”

I originally planned on just putting up “Rescue Blues” and then adding another track from the set in the next week or two. While I was typing my itunes shifted to “New York, New York” which is my personal favorite from the set, I’m taking it as a sign or at least an abstract nudge to tell you how I really wasn’t a huge “New York, New York” fan before hearing this version, now I’m obsessed. These two songs are the epitomy of what aspect of his songs that a word like “Love” barely touches the surface on. My emotions/his songs they feel one and the same.

All songs are are for promotional purposes only. If you or an artist you represent would like some content removed send your hateful money grubbing emails over to Heycoolkid@yahoo.com and I’ll be more than happy to take the songs down and never reference you/the artist you represent in a positive light again. That’s the deal. It’s art it should be free!  If it’s good people will still buy it.

My Own Soundtrack: Perks Of Being A Wallflower

9 Oct

So this is my life, and I want you to know that I am both happy and sad, and I’m still trying to figure out how that can be

Three  important aspects of my life are music, books, and movies. Very rarely do I not end up at the movie theater less than twice a week . I also have the privilege of working at a job where I spend thirty percent of my time at work reading which equates out to about three books a week.

I only give you that seemingly unnecessary information as a segue into this statement. Perks Of Being A Wallflower is my All-Time Favorite book. I’ve never related to a character more in my life than Charlie, even as an adult, it’s as if my thoughts have been written by someone else. “It’s strange because sometimes, I read a book, and I think I am the people in the book”. And yes Catcher In The Rye is also one of my all-time favorites, sure they feel similar but so does Bob Dylan and Neil Young  (Neil Young is great Bob Dylan is the greatest that’s the difference, although J.D. Salinger was a much better writer Chbosky’s story is more personal, more real).

So Steven Chbosky has made what could be the best (or worst) move imaginable by electing to direct the Perks Of  Being A Wallflower movie himself. The casting seems off but could work. I’m simply afraid that he cast it the same way summit did with Twilight  where they elected to go for what aesthetically made sense when hoping to draw in a pre-existing teen market, I think this is always a terrible move but I’m sure it fiscally makes sense because twelve year olds will line up to see their new trend-crush star in a movie.

Prozac Nation had the same vibe as Perks and the casting of that movie was what set it apart, get someone who can act but feels the need to prove themselves; which could very possibly be the attraction of having EmmaWatson play as Sam and since I already am in love with her I’ll give her a chance, but Logan Lerman and especially Nina Dobrev seem like awful choices for Charlie and his sister. I always imagined Charlie to be, I don’t know, like Conor Oberst (the way I imagined him when listening to lifted not the strung out drunk passing out on stage Conor from 2004-2009 or the enlightened/mature (but still drunk) recent reincarnation of Oberst).  I can’t imagine a better fit for Bill than Paul Rudd who is the exact image I had when reading the book so there’s a chance they’ll all be a solid fit. We’ll see.

The one concern I have is the debate I’ve heard abouttime-period. No I DO NOT think the movie should be set in the nineties and I DO NOT think the songs from the book should be used in the movie other than The SmithsAsleep“. First off the nineties sucked, I was there, I lived it, they were terrible; Fashion was garbage, the music luke-warm with mediocrity, nobody pushed anything, it was all status-quo and “Cool,” it took something like Emo to shake things up enough to get music moving in a creative direction. Yes I know that Emo was borderline garbage thanks to it coinciding with the creation of auto-tune and the first time that home studios were affordable so every kid with an acoustic guitar and well-off parents was able to fill purevolume and myspace with carbon copy after carbon copy of a shitty model (there were some really great bands though) but it took that to get where we are now so I’m thankful for it. Disco was garbage but look at how thirty years later it has developed into Electronic- Pop which is downright good music.

Anyways if there were one movie I could create a soundtrack for it would be Perks Of Being A Wallflower. It’s a dream job of mine to do soundtracks in general (and I really have no idea how to go about doing it) but one in-particular I have daydreams of doing is Perks. Here is how it would go:

*I loaned my copy out so all of this is from memory (I already had the quotes lined up for this) so a few aspects may be slightly out of order or combined*

“And I thought about how many people have loved those songs. And how many people got through a lot of bad times because of those songs. And how many people enjoyed good times with those songs. And how much those songs really mean. I think it would be great to have written one of those songs. I bet if I wrote one of them, I would be very proud. I hope the people who wrote those songs are happy. I hope they feel it’s enough. I really do because they’ve made me happy. And I’m only one person.”

First off, the song for the trailer would be - Houses – “Soak It Up” (Start at 1:10)

Or

Big Red Marbles – “The Parts You Can Stand”

.

Opening CreditsYuck – “Suicide Policeman”

“I just need to know that someone out there listens and understands and doesn’t try to sleep with people even if they could have. I need to know that these people exist.”

“So, this is my life. And I want you to know that I am both happy and sad and I’m still trying to figure out how that could be.”

.

.Japandroids – “Younger Us”

“We accept the love we think we deserve.”

“Patrick actually used to be popular before Sam bought him some good music.”

“Do you always think this much, Charlie?”
“Is that bad?” I just wanted someone to tell me the truth.
“Not necessarily. It’s just that sometimes people use thought to not participate in life.”
“Is that bad?”
“Yes.”

.When Charlie meets Sam and PatrickFanfarlo – “You Are One Of The Few Outsiders Who Understands Us”

“I remembered this one time that I never told anyone about. The time we were walking. Just the three of us. And I was in the middle. I don’t remember where and I don’t remember when. I don’t even remember the season. I just remember walking between them and feeling for the first time that I belonged somewhere.”

.

Driving with Sam and Patrick - Work Drugs – “Rad Racer”

“I have since bought the record, and I would tell you what it was, but truthfully, it’s not the same unless you’re driving to your first real party, and you’re sitting in the middle seat of a pickup with two nice people when it starts to rain.”

.

Start Of Party: J Roddy Watson And The Business – “Rock And Roll II”

.

Wolfgang – “Pieces Of You”

.

When high at the party - The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart – “Say No To Love”

“He’s a wallflower. You see things. You keep quiet about them. And you understand.”

.

Driving through the bridge- The Gaslight Anthem – “The Backseat”

“Five minutes of a lifetime were truly spent, and we felt young in a good way.”

“There’s something about that tunnel that leads to downtown. It’s glorious at night. Just glorious. You start on one side of the mountain, and it’s dark, and the radio is loud. As you enter the tunnel, the wind gets sucked away, and you squint from the lights overhead. When you adjust to the lights, you can see the other side in the distance just as the sound of the radio fades because the waves just can’t reach. Then, you’re in the middle of the tunnel, and everything becomes a calm dream. As you see the opening get closer, you just can’t get there fast enough. And finally, just when you think you’ll never get there, you see the opening right in front of you. And the radio comes back even louder than you remember it. And the wind is waiting. And you fly out of the tunnel onto the bridge. And there it is. The city. A million lights and buildings and everything seems as exciting as the first time you saw it. It really is a grand entrance.”

Sam screamed the fun scream, and there it was. Downtown lights on buildings and everything that makes you wonder. Sam sat down and started laughing. Patrick started laughing. I started laughing. and in that moment, I swear we were infinite.”

Getting a crush on SamPrinceton – “Clamoring For Your Heart”

.

Alex Drumm – “Bedspins”

“I just think it’s bad when a boy looks at a girl and thinks that the way he sees her is better than she actually is. And I think it’s bad when the most honest way a boy can look at a girl is through a camera.”

Stornoway – “Boats And Trains”

.

In the background after the Rocky Horror Picture Show-

Born Ruffians – “Hummingbird”

“Nobody felt sad as long as we could postpone tomorrow with more nostalgia.”

Alberta Cross – “ATX”

“I guess I could tell people about Punk Rocky and walking home from school and things like that. Maybe these are my glory days, and I’m not even realizing it because they don’t involve a ball.”

.

Song Mary Elizabeth puts on when alone at her houseGramatic – “Dream Big”

.

Bishop Allen – “Quarter to Three”

.

Walking while on acidScott Orr – “Nobody’s Someone”

.

Thinking of his aunt - Ryan Adams – “Memory Lane”

“I even made her a mix tape and left it at the grave. I hope you do not think that makes me weird.”

.

In the background while reading the poemBig Red Marbles – “Make That Call”

Sam and Patrick looked at me. And I looked at them. And I think they knew. Not anything specific really. They just knew. And I think that’s all you can ever ask from a friend.”

.

When he’s missing Sam and PatrickBon Iver – “Blood Bank”

“I don’t know how much longer I can keep going without a friend. I used to be able to do it very easily, but that was before I knew what having a friend was like. It’s much easier not to know things sometimes.”

“Everything can’t be low self-esteem, can it?”

“I just wish that God or my parents or Sam or my sister or someone would just tell me what’s wrong with me. Just tell me how to be different in a way that makes sense. To make this all go away. And disappear. I know that’s wrong because it’s my responsibility, and I know that things get worse before they get better because that’s what my psychiatrist says, but this is a worse that feels too big.”

.

Side two track two of Charlie’s mix for PatrickWildlife – “Drunken Heart”

“I hope it’s the kind of second side that he can listen to whenever he drives alone and feel like he belongs to something whenever he’s sad. I hope it can be that for him.”

Stars – “Asleep (The Smiths Cover)”

“I realized at that moment that I really did love her. Because there was nothing to gain, and that didn’t matter.”

.

While Kissing Sam – Lucy Rose -“First (Live Acoustic)”

And Sam looked at the paper and then she looked at me.
“Charlie. . . Have you ever kissed a girl?”
I shook my head no. It was so quiet.
“Not even when you were little?”
I shook my head no again. And she looked very sad.
She told me about the first time she was kissed. She told me that it was with one of her dad’s friends. She was seven. And she told nobody except Mary Elizabeth and then Patrick a year ago. And she started to cry. And she said something that I won’t forget. Ever.
“I know that you know that I like Craig. And I know that I told you not to think of me that way. And I know that we can’t be together like that. But I want to forget all those things for a minute. Okay?”
“Okay”
“I want to make sure that the first person you kiss loves you. Okay?”
“Okay” She was crying harder now. And I was, too, because when I hear something like that I just can’t help it.
“I just want to make sure of that. Okay?”
“Okay”
And she kissed me. And it was the kind of kiss that I could never tell my friends about out loud. It was the kind of kiss that made me know that I was never so happy in my whole life.

.

When Sam and Patrick are leaving for college - The Head And The Heart – “Rivers And Roads”

“Patrick started running after the sunset. And Sam immediately followed him. And I saw them in silhouette. Running after the sun.”

.

High Highs – “Live In Dreams (Wild Nothing Cover)”

“I laid down on his old bed, and I looked through the window at this tree that was probably a lot shorter when my dad looked at it. And I could feel what he felt on the night when he realized that if he didn’t leave, it would never be his life. It would be theirs. At least that’s how he’s put it.”

.

Under Electric Light – “Someone Somewhere”

“Sometimes, I look outside, and I think that a lot of other people have seen this snow before. Just like I think that a lot of other people have read those books before. And listened to those songs. I wonder how they feel tonight.”

.

Phineas And The Lonely Leaves – “Those Were The Days”

“Things change. And friends leave. And life doesn’t stop for anybody”

.

Sun Airway – “Put the Days Away”

“I was looking at the photographs and I started thinking that there was a time when these weren’t memories.”

.

41st And Home – “Wilderness Eyes”

“So I guess we are who we are for a lot of reasons. And maybe we’ll never know most of them. But even if we don’t have the power to choose where we come from, we can still choose where we go from there. We can still do things. And we can try to feel okay about them.”

Maybe it’s good to put things in perspective. Sometimes, I think that the only perspective is to really be there.”

“It’s great that you can listen and be a shoulder to someone, but what about when someone doesn’t need a shoulder? What if they need the arms or something like that? You can’t just sit there and put everybody’s lives ahead of yours and think that counts as love. You just can’t. You have to do things.”

.

Closing Credits – Noah And The Whale – “Blue Skies”

“So, if this does end up being my last letter, please believe that things are good with me, and even when they’re not, they will be soon enough.
And I will believe the same about you.

So that's along the lines of how I hope the music sounds when the movie finally comes out.

The Poem Charlie Reads (someone referenced it as  E.E. Cummings but I’m not sure if that is true or not)

Once on a yellow peice of paper with green lines

he wrote a poem

and he called it “chops”

because that was the name of his dog

and thats what it was all about

his teacher gave him an A

and a gold star

and his mother hung it on the kitchen door

and read it to his aunts.

that was the year Father Tracy

took all the kids to the zoo

and he let them sing on the bus

and his little sister was born

with tiny nails and no hair

and his mother and father kissed alot

and the girl around the corner sent him a

Valentine signed with a row of X’s

and he had to ask his father what the X’s meant

and his father always tucked him in bed at night

and was always there to do it

once on a piece of white paper with blue lines

he wrote a poem

he called it “Autumn”

because that was the name of the season

and that’s what it was all about

and his teacher gave him an A

and asked him to write more clearly

and his mother never hung it on the kithcen door

beause of the new paint

and the kids told him

that Father Tracy smoked cigars

and left butts on the pews

and sometime they would burn holes

that was the year his sister got glasses

with thick lenses and black frames

and the girl around the corner laughed

when he asked her to go see santa claus

and the kids told him why

his mother and father kissed alot

and his father never tucked him in bed at night

and his father got mad

when he cried for him to do it

once on a paper torn from his notebook

he wrote a poem

and he called it “Innocence: A Question”

because that was the question about his girl

and thats what it was all about

and his professor gave him an A

and a strange steady look

and his mother never hung it on the kitchen door

because he never showed her

that was the year Father Tracy died

and he forgot how the end

of the Apostles’s Creed went

and he caught his sister

making out on the back porch

and his mother and father never kissed

or even talked

and the girl around the corner

wore too much make up

that made him cough when he kissed her

but he kissed her anyway

becuase it was the thing to do

and at 3 am he tucked himself into bed

his father snoring soundly

that’s why on the back of a brown paper bag

he tried another poem

and he called it “Absolutely Nothing”

because that’s what it was really all about

and he gave himself an A

and a slash on each damned wrist

and he hung it on the bathroom door

because this time he didnt think

he could reach the kitchen—-

The Definitive(ish) Hooded Sweatshirt Playlist

31 Aug

Time for night drives, passionate crushes, longing breakups,  and all-night conversations with the best of friends. Fall is finally here and I can’t help but feel that life just gets better the second i get to zip up a hoody.

I grew up in an exceptionally small town between the edge of suburbia and the middle of nowhere. As far as my memories go when i look back it seems my group of friends will always remain in my memory on endless drives through Podunk (it’s a real town) with the leaves changing and the air cooling off.

If I could go back to one point in time it would be on one of those drives, feeling complete but at the same time fighting back an unspoken worry  that with morning would come change, that we would reach the moment called “grown up” and would all say goodbye. Those drives had an undercurrent that whatever we were going to do we had to do it immediately because change was coming, so we drove until the last breathe of night holding on to the moment with the firmest grips and the quietest of hearts.

Never ending  conversations with crushes, falling in love through nothing more than words and and the electricity of being so close and talking so quiet, both truly listening.  Those first kisses that lit my life on fire, those heartbreaks that destroyed me, and those quiet nights when I’d drive alone and reminisce about it all.

Sitting on the hood of my car next to a close friend, in intense conversations about  “what does it all mean,” “is this all that there is to life” and coming to our own conclusions about God and the way everything is broken and pulling apart and yet it all makes sense, it all forms a whole, and how we’re all drawn together by some secret that we couldn’t even begin to understand. How many cigarettes did we smoke in succession on nights like that? How much of anything did we smoke on those nights?

That’s the place I’m at when it comes to making up this playlist. I plan it out all year so that by the time Fall hits and I’m heading down to see my brother in Bloomington or heading back to my hometown to visit family I can pull these songs up on my ipod and feel that fullness once again.

I’m still making memories, I’m growing up but not yet grown up and the friends I have now feel that as well, we’re perpetually in a moment where things are about to change. This fall as with all the ones I’ve known before  reminds me to embrace what we have because soon it will be gone,  so in a way i guess some things will forever remain the same.

The idea of this playlist is to capture all of that, if there’s one mix other than a solid break-up mix where lyrics carry the entire thing this is it. I really hope you find something on here that makes life better or helps you get through the worse or at the least gives you a friend that understands.

Send me a message or comment with your own playlists I’m interested to see what yours would look like.

Jeremy Enigk – “World Waits” - [MP3]

I realize how ridiculously long this post ended up being. I’d debated breaking it up as i had with the “Trapped In Time, Surrounded By Evil, Low On Gas”  playlist but that one was easy to breakdown. Although you may only download one or two tracks in my mind it’ll get listened to as a whole (I may have just truly realized why bands hate downloads instead of listening to an entire album).  Either way I hope you can look past the length and enjoy.

As usual all songs are for promotional purposes only. If you or a band you represent would like some content removed leave a comment or send me an email (the address can be found in thesection).
