Everything Got Left Here Waiting For What Comes Next

1 Oct

This is probably my strongest post in some time, I really hope you get down on these songs in the same fashion as I have been lately:

Glowbug – “The Shows” [mp3]

Don’t take this lightly when I tell you to go over to Glowbug’s Bandcamp page and download this (free) album! That way when everyone’s talking about the best albums to come out this year you’ll fully understand why “Mr. Plastic” is on every-ones list (or by god it should be). I just did a post on Listen Before You Buy that is a little more verbose about my feelings for them check it out here.

It’s no secret that Heycoolkid! has an indescribably teenagish infatuation with Neighbors, not my neighbors per say who are an eclectic group I’d be more than happy to bid farewell to, one has night terrors and collects zip lock bags the other I’m pretty sure is on that crack and spends an hour a day intently staring at my bushes (creepy doesn’t scratch the surface on that one),  but the other kind of Neighbors whose music is phenomenal. “Ophelia” is jut one more example of why.

.

.

For “Ellery,” being the first song from Conveyor to cross my path, the only word that comes to mind is impressed.   It’s a song that captures you immediately, like a friend throwing their arm around your shoulder  pulling you in closer to draw focus on what they have to say. You feel comfortable there in the intimacy and the lighthearted feeling of togetherness knowing in the back of your mind that this will be the last time you will feel such closeness because your bags are packed and the future is waiting. This is a song about hope and the things we leave behind in pursuit of it, about being alone and content and overall finding optimism in such contentment. No matter how I try to explain this song at the bottom of  everything I’m trying to get across is that  “Ellery” is an amazing track from a band I’m immediately going to get to know better. You probably should too.

Typhoon – “Summer Home” [mp3]

Summer Home” is a very autobiographical song of childhood longing and standing in that pivotal moment of wondering if we’ve left our happiness behind us or if the future could really bring hope even when it doesn’t look that way. As far as instrumentation goes there is a lot going on that’s absolutely fantastic, unfortunately the lyrics just steal all attention from it. This is a good thing…

In my peripheral sight I reach out for you but when I turn my head I’m in an empty room. A faceless clock with hands unmoved before a layer of dust a cobweb or two.  In a broken mirror with my broken truths now when I comb my hair I pull the gray ones loose. My old house my childhoods tomb it is a failing light but it will come back soon.”

.

.

Alex Drumm – “Empty Rooms” [mp3]

This is a long overdue Alex Drumm addition. I downloaded the album at the beginning of July and somehow forgot about it (just being honest).  I sat down last week and really went through the tracks and found it to be a very solid start for what looks to be a strong and positive career. “Sparks In The Grass“  still remains my favorite track thus far. I just did a write up for this song over on Listen Before You Buy, if you’ve got the time check it out.

There’s always an amount of respect I reserve for individuals that create solid fully developed music on their own.  Jonathan Visger exceeds that for being able to not only create music on his own but to develop something that is upbeat and so exceedingly well-rounded that most full bands can’t come up with what he does. “Feathers (Don’t Change On Me)” is a perfect example of this with it’s head nodding catchiness, not to mention the guitar hook that’s been stuck in my head for days, I’m looking forward to seeing what Absofacto gives us in the future.

.

.

Oregon Bike Trails – “Cayucas”

I thought of Oregon Bike Trails while writing about Absofacto so it just seemed fitting to throw one more Kevin Arnold track up since he has basically been the soundtrack to my summer. His  music seems angled that way so it works out for both of us. Not to say he won’t put out something great before I’m done bitching about another Indiana winter but if he doesn’t things will be alright we’ll be friends again when the weather feels a bit more hopeful.

.

.

.

Young Circles – “2012″ [mp3]

With how phenomenal of a year this has been as far as great music is concerned I can’t believe the lack in solid old fashion rock music right now (I’m pretty sure I was saying the same thing last year). It seems like every band I get an email from that could fall into the “Rock” category fits into the “Crap” category as well. It’s nice to hear a band like Young Circles who focus on creating music and only on creating music, it seems like the other guys put all of their focus into what clothes they should be wearing, copying another guys guitar set-up and sitting around sipping Miller Lite and trying to convince themselves they will be needing a tour bus by this time next year. Peter Andrew King – “Fireflies” [mp3]

I’ve had this one slated for a specific playlist that is in the works but I’ve got the feeling it will be a while before I finally put it up. Since I’ve really been digging this 60′s garage influenced track  now is as good of time as any to put it up. King is somewhat of  a  jack-of-all-trades in the Indy scene filling in on multiple instruments for multiple bands. Up to this point he hasn’t had the big push he deserves around town but it’s undoubtedly coming. I feel like the overall consensus is that he hasn’t yet fully figured out what direction he’s going to go in so everyone is basically waiting for it to happen, as long as he’s putting out songs like “Fireflies”  that is completely fine by me.

.

.

Ducktails – “Sit Around With Ya” [mp3]

.

.

Ducktails is an artist where you are either a fan or you are not, there isn’t much middle ground. Sure he could easily be some random dude playing at a party but if in fact he were some random dude at a party I would love it all that much more, not less. “Sit Around With Ya” is the bonus track from Arcade Dynamics, I think it came as part of the digital package but I’m not positive. This is number two on my list of favorite ducktails songs, “Killing The Vibe” being number one.

.

.

Little Jungles – “Drive Yerself Crazy” [mp3]

You’re always telling me all the negative things that I know I could change but it takes a long time to change. You always say that I’m driving you mad but I think you got it backwards cause you’re driving yourself mad

Off the top of my head I could list more girls than there are songs on this playlist that if I had a little more to drink tonight  would be receiving  this song as a personal message,  nothing else typed just the link to the this song, maybe the message would have a cute little title like “Here’s a song that made me think of you ;) ” thanks Little Jungles for saying what needs to be said. Name your own price on the “Wuts Goin Thru Yer Head” album over on Little Jungles Bandcamp page.

.

.

.

I Break Horses – “Hearts

Where are you heading? Wherever you are going take this song with you! With it’s everything will be alright vibe, the optimistic tone, the racing drum beat, “Hearts” is constantly pushing forward in a steady development of sound that sinks deeper and deeper, share “Hearts” collectively, preferably while driving into the sunset with friends.

.

.

.

Stroik – “One More Time” [mp3]

I came across “One More Time” as part of my blog feed and from the first listen I was in. Without knowing anything about Stroik this song has made me an instant fan with his relaxed vocals  this song does it for me (whatever it is). He’s just spotting up right now but in a few months we’ll all be familiar.

.

.

.

Seapony – “Late Summer” [mp3]

This is my favorite Seapony song, I’ve been trying to keep it to myself but since I’ve noticed that only “Dreaming” has been getting the sort of attention that all of Seapony‘s music deserves it seemed only right for me to share “Late Summer” with anyone who hasn’t heard it yet. Not to mention there probably wouldn’t be a more fitting time to share it than now.

.

.

.

Gem Club – “Twins” [mp3]

Gem Club have completely stolen my heart! As long as they continue creating amazing art like this they can keep it.  I realize I already posted this over on LBYB and recently put up “Breakers” on my “Definitive(ish) Hooded Sweatshirt Playlist” but one of the perks of running a website is that I get to make the rules myself and personally I think it would be worth it to put these guys up every day until a Gem Club monument is erected. These are how words can feel, this is how a song is supposed to feel, REAL!

Venice Is Sinking – “Okay (Henslee Version)” [mp3]

.

.

.

Yes Nice – “Mountain Man” [mp3]

Mountain Man” settles deep and feels like a friend’s hand in some long dark tunnel of emotion. If you hear this and agree hold tightly, don’t think about letting go.

.

.

.

Bon Iver – “Beth/Rest (Solo Piano Version)”[mp3]

I’m just another voice in the sea of Bon Iver praise, I know this, but when I thought I had finally come to realize how amazing Justin Vernon is and how grateful we should all be to have one of the greatest songwriters of all-time creating music right before us he goes and and puts out this version of “Beth/Rest” and makes it crystal clear that he has barely even begun to show what he can create with his troubled soul. This song is the absolute, the pinnacle of greatness,  emotion at its truest rawest form, sadness shaped into a mountain of understanding, this is everything, EVERYTHING, that I love from music and am thankful each and ever time I replay this song to have it in my life.

Second-String To A Dream

Mother Falcon – “Fireflies” [mp3]

Like an upbeat Quick Said The Bird, Mother Falcon are incredibly talented musicians who understand the importance of being part of a whole. Nothing escapes from the ether yet at the same time every note in this song is incredible. The vocal round-about does me in more than any other aspect of “Fireflies” reminding me of a mature Lydia who at one point in time I was obsessed with.

.

.

Scattered Trees – “Sympathy” [mp3]

This is the title track from Scattered Trees absolutely incredible album which was penned after the death of lead singer Nate Eiesland’s father. The entire album embodies every aspect of emotion possible. As with some of the greatest art ever created if you give an artist something so powerful they need to find a release, a way to make sense of things uncontrollable, somehow it manifests into something great.

.

.

Youth Lagoon – “July” [mp3]

Youth Lagoon’s new album “The Year Of Hibernation” comes out on the 27th. This is one of two free tracks they’ve handed out from it (I’ll be featuring “cannons” on the next post). The strength of “July” is how they slow play it until two and a half minutes in and then begin transforming it into this explosion of foot tapping pent up emotion that doesn’t let up until it has developed into this “intenses plénitude atmosphériques” that dissipates into a vacuum of longing. Trevor Powers has figured it out.

.

.

Motel Motel – “Coffee” [mp3]

From the opening “wait until i get home before you walk out my life” to the “I don’t need your help I can feel helpless on my own” of the bridge “Coffee” is a song that deals with a break up from the bands perspective. From line to line you get a full take on a typical adult relationship of thinking we need someone, to realizing we need that person only until we find someone we need more, and dealing with the balancing act of the lives we choose and the people who come along after those choices who are expected to sit on the sidelines playing second-string to a dream. Basically it’s the indie version of kiss’ “Beth

.

.

Neighbors -“August” [mp3]

I’ve been keeping an eye on Neighbors ever since I came across “Hooligans” last February. “From the first clap in you can tell “August” is going in a direction you want to follow. I’ve been listening to it on repeat for nearly a half hour now and it’s yet to lose the magnetism.Neighbors’ entire EP of the same title is just as attention-demanding as this song,  get it for free through their Bandcamp. “-(via)

.

.

White Life – “Time Is Wasting” [mp3]

This is the most addicting track I’ve heard in months. It doesn’t matter what I’m doing, when this song comes on I’m dancing. Two notes from the opening synth and I start telling myself  “Not this time. You’re not dancing this time” then out of nowhere Kevin Cronin shows up and is holding my hand reminding me “I can’t fight this feeling anymore” and suddenly I’m in some lame eighties movie dancing while hanging clothes up. I picture my roommates walking in “are you dancing with the swiffer?”  “um,no. Were YOU dancing with the swiffer?” then without warning I’m playing air-guitar along with the sickest sounding lead in a pop song since I hit puberty.

.

.

JJ – “New Work” [mp3]

If I said two words; the first being “Swedish” what would the second be? Yes pop music and swedes go together like chucks and thirty year old men who think they’re still relevant. What? Would you have preferred sluts and Ke$ha or maybe gay pride rallies and Lady Gaga? The point is “New Work”  is another example of world dominance from a country I couldn’t find on a globe if my life depended on it. I’m guessing it’s not in Africa or the middle-east and probably not in Texas… “I’d like to phone a friend Regis .” This song does prove that if you take Jay-Z and that chick without any talent off of  “New York” and then let someone with actual mixing skills get their hands a little dirty it actually begins to sound rather good. Although, if i have to sit through the last thirty seconds of talking at the end of this track one more time I may never listen to it again…just quit talking. “this is my life yadayadayada cool sweet whatever.Holy annoying delay batman. ( I first heard it here)

.

.

Boots Electric – “Boots Electric Theme” [mp3]

Basically this song should be called Eagles Of Death Metal go Pop. Why is Jesse Hughes so good at dissecting genre’s and then creatively turning them on themselves? It’s like forcing someone on acid to stare into a mirror. Hell I don’t even like AC/DC but the sample-esque lead is a nice touch.

I probably like this video so much because of a running stoned conversation that took place between three of my friends that encompassed all of 2003.

.

.

Everything Everything – “Airstrike On Your Forehead (MY KZ UR BF demo)”[mp3]

There’s a vast rift between what this song sounds like and what’s being said. You can figure it out for yourself.

.

.

.

.

.

Dawn Landes – “Young Girl” [mp3]

This is the first I’ve heard from Dawn Landes. I’ve gathered enough about her to be suspect about her “talent” since she’s got an audio engineers background. which is basically the music version of “those who can’t write edit.” She’s married to Josh Ritter who rides the fence of respect with me. It’s just hard to dig someone when you’re not sure whether their overall ambition is artistic or for recognition. I know from reading that it would probably seem that I’m being negative. I promise I’m not. If I didn’t respect this song I wouldn’t promote or try to get others to listen to it. I’m just saying that Dawn Landes is on my radar and the jury’s out until I hear what the next album sounds like.

.

.

Summer Camp – “Better Off Without You” [mp3]

I REALLY like this song. I’m nervous that some worthless WB / MTV show whose target audience is basically teenage girls with down syndrome will end up destroying this for me. It just sounds like one of those songs you’d hear playing over some commercial advertising the next weeks episode of “The Hills” where after a break up some unimportant person is going to be crying until they black out drunk in a limo. I kind of hope this ends up being on the new “footloose” movie though because that seems like an ideal fit.

.

.

Look, Stranger! – “If You’re Listening”[mp3]

Here’s another solid song from Look, Stranger! . When did they start sounding all GQ? They wear it well.

.

.

.

.

.

White Arrows – “I’m On Fire” (Bruce Springsteen Cover) [mp3]

I spent most of my life hating “the boss” and then one morning something just clicked and ever since I’ve been a huge Bruce Springsteen fan. I’ve heard enough covers of this song to make me nauseous, or at least should make me nauseous, I still give each one a chance though. As with most “I’m On Fire” covers this one sounds nearly identical to the original but I appreciate the White Arrows seventies punk-pop twangish touch  which actually adds to the song where as most often when bands try to accent Springsteen you can’t help but scratch you head and ask “why.”

.

.

All songs are for promotion only. I do not own any of these songs. If you like one of the songs get to know the band, check out a show, buy the vinyl or at least tell a friend. If you are/represent an artist whose music is on this page and would like it removed just send me an email and I’ll be more than happy to both remove it and recommend them in a negative light from now until the rapture. If there’s anything I’m missing or missing the point on let me know.

Don’t be scared of the comments section.

Februaryish Mix

27 Feb

1.Oh No! Yoko- 90s kids

every ounce of me wants to hate this song but i can’t.Just like riding a razor scooter you know how it looks to others and you know not all of your friends are going to understand but that doesn’t matter because  it just feels right

2.acid house kings-are we lovers or are we friends?

Before heading down to bloomington last week I was making up a mix for my brother and originally slated this as track one. Then after wise considerations scratched it all together, i’m not sure our relationship has quite reached that point yet

3.Ducktails featuring panda bear- killin’ the vibe

I realize that almost every blog in the next three months will have something panda bear related. We all except that noah lennox is brilliant, this song is on the mix to make it crystal clear—-”sometimes it’s alright to be part of the machine”

4. i’m tuning into- I’m Going

This song makes me wish my girlfriend was more into indie just so i could make this a  track one on her next mix.

5. The Bees- I Really Need Love

6. Smith Westerns-Still New

i’m still touch and go with smith westerns, i haven’t figured out yet whether they are just a flavor of the week or if they are really something worth investing in. SXSW should give me a better idea

7. Wild Life- Drunken Heart

8. Meeting of Important People- I know every street

9. Cotton Jones- Somehow To Keep It Going

10. Neighbors-Hooligans

11. Telekinesis-Car Crash

“love comes and goes and everything flows til you feel so lonely

you still feel so broken

it’s a chemical reaction based upon attraction

will i die alone, you know i’m so concerned, you know i’m so confused

like a lost child, little lost child”

12. Bright Eyes-Shell Games

” My private life is an inside joke, no one will explain it to me”

maybe my album review wasn’t completely honest when i started talking about the personal depth of  the lyrics on this album.  The more i listen the more the subtleties come to surface, this may actually be the most honest album connor has put out (okay second most  I’m wide awake it’s morning goes without saying is  the most honest album he’s done. Wait, crap, make it third because it’s not fever’s and mirrors either). I think what will throw most people off on the people’s key is that the tone of of the songs rarely match with the sentiment actually involved with the song…outside of ladder song and one for you one for me… which by the way makes this the strongest closing on a conner oberst album as of yet.

13. Tigers That Talked- The Merchant

14.  Braids-Lemonade

15.Panda Bear- Last Night at the Jetty

I’m still calling tomboy indie’s chinese democracy until i’ve pirated the album myself (there’s no way i’m paying for it after the wait…UNLESS it’s amazing, which IT WILL BE then i’ll buy it at the show)

(this video….UM YESSS!!!!)

16.jenny owen Youngs- Led to the Sea

17.Emma hill and Her Gentleman Callers- All That Might Have Been

Look the second this song came up i wanted to toss it to the trash, then about thirty seconds in i realized there’s actually something great being said.  I’d like to see the tiller’s cover this song...someone make it happen!!!

18.houses-this is war

19.Jarrod Gorbel- Ten Years Older

I kind of always felt like The honorary title was more of a moniker anyways, so when i hear people getting up in arms about the Gorbel solo album, what else is to be said other than “really?”. I will say this one is way too commercial sounding overall but the lyric strength is still there maybe not as jaded and angsty but this is still a personal album.    ATTENTION HIPSTERS: you act like bands only have one good album in them. I get it the more albums, the more people are exposed to there music the less inclusive it feels, stop being so damn arrogant if it’s good listen to it or at the least stop trashing it because they don’t live in brooklyn.

20.yeasayer- I Remember (Painted Palms Remix)

Yeasayer dropped a sweet little Ep off on valentines day with two I Remember remixes one of my favorite songs on odd blood. Pick it up yo self here:  http://yeasayer.net/valentines/

21.Fleet Foxes- helplessness Blues

………….I have every intention of throwing a few wentworth Kesey songs on upcoming playlists. Before that happens check out this video. The texture tastes so00 good (both in sight and sound)
