But Tonight We’re Going To Get Out Of Our Heads

15 Oct

There is an immense amount of music I want to share, hopefully I’ll be able to get it all out in the next week.

Did you ever watch that tv show where the girl could stop time by touching her fingers together? I thought it was mind blowing when I was like eight. If I could have one super power that would probably be it, the use I could put it to right now words can’t begin to express.

Here is some great music to download and share.

.

.

Futurebirds – “Wild-Heart (Stevie Nicks Cover)” [mp3]

One of my favorite quotes is “sometimes you have to watch someone love something before you can love it yourself-Donald Miller. Stevie nicks is a perfect example of this for me . I grew up watching my mom LOVE her some Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks, when I was younger I hated it, the way kids hate things their parents do, but somehow in the past few years I’ve come to really appreciate that music and am beginning to grasp the greatness I once scoffed at. The fact that not only are Futurebirds covering a great song, somehow by sticking close to the original they have found a way to bring new life to “Wild Heart” and at the same time possibly introduce this music to a whole new audience that may have been missing out.

The fact that they cover (intentionally or not I’m not sure) the way she did it from her backstage clip where she cut out the majority of verses is what gives a whole new spirit to the song that had they done the song in it’s entirety would not be there.

Siskiyou – “Twigs And Stones” [mp3]

I featured this Siskiyou song on one of my Listen Before You Buy posts at the end of August check it out here.

Hurricane Bells – “Possibilities” [mp3]

Certain songs just hit home and this is a perfect example.Having the days pile up one on the other, the looking back and seeing where I thought I would be at this point in my life, remembering the friends and the hope, feeling that weight and stepping back from the moment and just saying there’s still a chance, there’s still possibilities, let’s live for tonight, let’s live for a change and forget about the past, I understand this, I connect with it. Hurricane Bells definitely did this one right.

.

.

Teenagers – “Sweet P” [mp3]

I’m sneaking this one onto this weeks mix solely as a refresher. As I’m starting to shape the “Best Of” lists I realize that this little diamond of a band has not seen the light of day on Heycoolkid!, this was a very selfish decision on my part but I can’t keep this guy a secret any longer. Teenagers is Holy Mountain/Burn Baby Burn‘s Travis Keymer and if those credentials aren’t enough hopefully this song is and if still you are not impressed I guess I’ll have to be the one to break the news to you that you are in fact an idiot.

.

.

French Films – Pretty In Decadence [mp3]

There are certain write-ups I’m a little more proud of than others. My French Films post is probably my favorite of the last month check it out here.

.

.

.

.

.

Glowbug – “Funeral Song” [mp3]

I’m not sure if there’s much more I can do to express how impressed I am by Glowbug. The only reason I have yet to put “Funeral Song” up is because every-time it comes on I think I’m hearing Gobble Gobble (sorry Born Gold) and I didn’t want the similarity of one song’s sound to affect your overall opinion of this incredible band. “Funeral Song” is still an amazing track even if it does feel oddly familiar.

.

.

Cookies – “Wilderness Tips” [mp3]

I’m not sure why there are so many overlapping songs on this weeks mix that I’ve posted recently on LBYB. I apologize usually I’m not as threaded with the other stuff I’ve written but there’s just been quite a few songs that I thought were too good to neglect Heycoolkid! by not adding them this week. “Wilderness Tips” is flat out addicting. Check out the post I did on Tuesday here.

.

.

Phantogram – “Don’t Move” [mp3]

I really hope that the upcoming Phantogram album has a fresher feel than “Don’t Move.” Supposedly this is just meant to show that they can still make music like they did on the last album and work as some sort of bridge from “Eyelid Movies” to the next album. I sure hope so, not that on it’s own “Don’t Move” isn’t a good song it’s just that it sounds like they combined “Mouthful Of Diamonds” and “When I’m Small” and added nothing else to it which makes the song obviously appealing but it’s a far cry from creative. I hope the pressure of a follow up album isn’t getting to the duo too much although I’m taking this song as a sign of that being the case.

.

.

The Japanese Popstars – “Shells Of Silver ft. James Vincent Mcmorrow (White Sea Remix)”[mp3]

This is ideally what I hope the new James Vincent Mcmorrow album sounds like. A little less stripped down with a nice electronic build-up. I know that everyone is completely in love with the guy but I’m not fully on board yet, I just don’t think he’s come close to his potential yet but when he does all of our minds should be blown.

.

.

Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick And Tich – “HoldTight” [mp3]

So I finally bought Death Proof  this past week (one of the greatest films ever made) which means outside of the Kill Bill movies I now own all of Tarantino‘s work. I forgot how insane Death Proof is, there’s something about guys who intentionally make a b-rate movie just for the love of the style. Sure there are people who don’t care for Death Proof but then again there are people who think The Rolling Stones are better than The Beatles, oh the misguided souls. Anyways if you haven’t seen Death Proof you should know out of the gate that it has quite possibly the best soundtrack of all-time and two of the sexiest actresses alive in it, Vennessa Ferlito and Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

(Warning this is a very graphic Clip from Death Proof)

.

.

Labrador City – “Feathers” [mp3]

.

.

Cheerleader – “Dreamer” [mp3]

.

.

.

.

.

.

.RAC -”1979 ft Liz Anjos (Smashing Pumpkins Cover)” [mp3]

This is the first decent Smashing Pumpkins cover I can remember having heard, should have figured RAC would have a hand in it not to mention Liz Anjos’ (The Pragmatic) vocals are perfect and perfectly fitting as always.

.

.

.

.

.

Teen Daze – “Violence (Daytrotter) “ [mp3]

I’m not sure what it is about this song but I’ve found myself really getting into it. This is a really stripped down  version of what was already low key but now takes a much more laid back angle than the original.

.

.

.

.

.

Lonesome Ghost – “I Was Only Trying To” [mp3]

New, young, and are already creating solid music. I’m keeping my ear in Lonesome Ghost’s direction.

.

.

Korallreven – “As Young As Yesterday ft.Victoria Bergsman” [mp3]

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

Steel Phantoms – “Floodlight” [mp3]

The way the three main elements of this song; the rhythm section, vocals, and the guitar all sound like three individual entities until two minutes and forty seconds in is impressive.  The drums and vocals at least have some sort of cohesiveness feeling as if they are coming from separate corners in the same warehouse but the guitar has that lonesomely intense feeling that your alone in a room listening to it being played. That’s not the only strong aspect of “Floodlight” from two-forty on the song just evolves and evolves from one vibe to another. This is art worth looking at with it’s rare craft and subtle strength.

.

.

((Sounder)) – “A War On The Coffee Table (Live)” [mp3]

I caught this video as a recommendation on facebook and having never heard ((Sounder)) before I was glad I did.

.

.

Little Jungles – “1000 Cigarettes” [mp3]

“1000 Cigarettes” is my favorite song on this weeks playlist. I can’t really explain why other than the fact that it is.

.

.

.

.

.

Grand Hallway – “Day After Tomorrow (Tom Waits Cover)” [mp3]

Last week I found myself listening/watching various Tom Waits Bukowsi readings (I do this from time to time) and then yesterday I ended up in a five minute unexpected but really enjoyable conversation with one of the local barista’s about his love for Tom Waits so I felt it fitting to add what very well may be my favorite Tom Waits cover.

If you haven’t seen the “Born Into This” Documentary I HIGHLY recommend it

.

.

Grandpa Was A Lion – “Dancer” [mp3]

My crush for Justin D’Onofrio‘s music continues…

Dancer” makes me want to cry or get drunk or both. Getting to the bottom, down to the very soul of emotion, and breathing this magnetism into it that is romantically sad yet as the song progresses like a blanket in deepest of night with  its subtle hint of calm.
It also reminds me of Caleb McCouch who is one of the best, not to mention virtually unknown, songwriters in the country who I’m going to see play in about three hours.

Pretentiously Unpretentious…July 2011

7 Jul

.

Pheramones- We Already Know

.

.

.

.

.

.When in doubt open with pheramones. At least that’s my philosophy when it comes to playlists i’m not sure what the track 1 should be. Energy, talent, pretentiously unpretentious… these guys have it all when it comes to being an ideal indie band. This song is a perfect example that they were ahead of the curve when putting this out in 2009.

.

.

Steel Phantoms- Fast Stop

.

.

.

.

.

Whenever listening to steel phantoms i can’t help but think this is what Caleb McCoach would sound like if he were more upbeat or maybe this is what Ra Ra Riot would come across like if they were more indie and less scene. Either way i dig steel phantoms and their ability to sound real and worth my time listening to.

.

.

Seapony- Dreaming

Just lo-fi enough to keep things interesting Seapony are one of the few bands who have found a way to embrace the hipster trend without using it as a crutch to hide behind. This is a genre they belong in unlike so many other (over) hyped bands i’m forced to listen to in growing numbers each week.

.

.

.

ARMS- Tiger Tamer

Todd Goldstein has that (sadly) rare ability of creating songs with such solid lyrics coupled with well fitting instrumentation that it appears effortless in the most flawless sort of way. Not that they are minimalistic but something about his songs sound like he knows how to do just enough for the track to come across contently and complete without weighing the song down by doing too much. Arms is currently on tour with Steel Phantoms and i didn’t know that until after this mix had been made, nice little coincidence.

.

.

.

Alex Winston- Sister Wife

I spent the weekend in Wisconsin with my girlfriend and her family and the most horrible disaster imaginable happened to me on the way there, my ipod died and to make things exponentially worse my girlfriend decided not to bring her mac for me to keep it charged. AAAHHHH! I was in the land of country music without a prayer.  The nearest place to buy anything other than skoal or cow feed was a walmart forty minutes away. FAIL. The trip itself was enjoyable enough that i was able to overlook the absence of hope for a few days but the drive home became a nightmare. Two hours of standstill traffic had me rummaging through the glovebox in search of a different mix from the one  we’d been listening to on repeat for the entire trip since the ipod debacle.  Like watching the heavens part and a dove descend i found a handful of burnt cd’s buried beneath my gf’s  scion manual and random pieces of glovebox parchment.  We were inching through Chicago when this track came on and turned the ole frown upside down. To anyone that was stuck on the i80/94 watching some guy dance frantically while his girlfriend watched on with fear… that was me and i had my reasons.

.

.

.

Cults – Make Time

.

.

.

.

.

.

.“Make Time” is one of my favorite tracks for any background playlist. It’s a perfect song to have on when doing things (or in my usual case… planning to do things). I’m not sure why i haven’t heard more buzz heading in Cults direction, i’m sure it’s coming.

.

.

Psychic Powers- Dreamboat (RAC Mix)

..

.

.

.

.

.

.

Amo Joy- Diggity Doom

.

.

.

.

.

It’s not much of a secret that i think Amo Joy are one of the better bands in town. Fun, intense, and sneakily solid. A band truly meant for more than Indianapolis has to offer them,  I hope they realize that before it’s too late.

.

.

In Tall Buildings- Warm Rock

.

.

.

.

.

.I had In Tall Buildings on a recent playlist for one of his more stripped down songs. I just want to make sure that everyone realizes there is a reason Erik Hall isn’t considered a solo artists, i think this song gets the job done of proving that.

.

.

Pheramones- I Wait

I rarely put two songs on a mix from the same band.  Every now and thenthere is a band worth the exception and this is one. It took me nine songs before i finally gave into the urge to put this song up. I wait is probably my favorite pheramones song and i can’t believe i haven’t put it up already.

.

.

The Milk Carton Kids- Maybe It’s Time (live)

.

.

.

.

.

.This song doesn’t really need a description it speaks for itself. Here’s a chance to check it out though.

.

.

Meredith Bragg – Birds of North America

.

.

.

.

.Any band that succesfully creates well layered songs that are allowed to breathe will always be underrated. Meredith Bragg is underrated.

.

.

The West Valley – Lay Down

.

.

.

.

.

.Every time one of The West Valley’s songs comes up i find the next three minutes flowing much more enjoyably.  Lay down reminds me slightly of “travellin’ song” by the avett brothers but only enough as a reference while still coming across in it’s own creative way. My favorite track from The West Valley is “I wonder what would’ve happened” so don’t be surprised when that comes up on another heycoolkid post in the near future, lay down just seemed to flow better with this weeks collection of songs, if you feel like getting ahead of me and grab it for yourself here .

.

.

Vetiver- Everyday

A great song to play on a summer evening, it’s definitely been played on many of mine.

.

.

.

This Will Destroy You- The World Is Our _

.

.

.

.

.

Although Vetiver’s “Everyday” is probably a better closing song for this week, i’m ending this one with an amazing song from This Will Destroy You. Don’t let the lack of vocals mislead you, this song has something to say that ninety-nine percent of bands can only hope to.

Let me know if there’s any music i may be missing or missing the point of. All songs are for promotion purposes only so if you are/represent an artist on this page and would like something removed let me know and i’ll be more than happy to both do it and never recommend your music again. Nothing personal but if word of mouth is less important than making a couple of dollars you are in it for the wrong reasons and that’s something i want nothing to do with.
