41st And Home – “Wilderness Eyes” [mp3]

Wilderness Eyes” is a song that from the first note I knew I was in love with. This is the kind of song I’m likely to hit repeat on and just let it play over and over. 41st and Home‘s  sound is obviously Vancouverish. I had hoped when I started looking them up to find they were from Montana or something but no dice, they are without a doubt from our Northern Border which is not a negative, I just can’t help but wonder why bands only get this sound when they are Canadian.

This video changes the meaning of the song completely which is one of the greatest things about putting music to an image. Where “Wilderness Eyes” had weight once connected with the video it now has purpose. The video makes me uncontrollably sad especially the scene with the Jeep which I honestly could write ten thousand words on and barely hit the surface but I’ll leave that for another day, if you understand where I’m coming from, fine, if not you’ll take your own thing from the footage and that may even be a better angle.

ANR – “The Endless Field Of Mercury’ [mp3]

With “The Endless Field Of Mercury” ANR have surpassed the whole band-to-keep-an-eye-on tag and solidified their place in my bands I respect category.

Quiet Company – “You, Me, & the Boatman”[mp3]

This is one track that I’d almost written off, not for lack of style or for not enjoying it but merely for how close to commercial “Pop” it sways towards at certain points but there’s complete redemption at 2:05 which although touching on that scream0-pop format of 2005 still comes across as a fresh idea and even more the texture in the vocals are dripping in fresh souls blood.

Conrad Plymouth – “Circle Drive” [mp3]

I know there are nearly four months left in 2011 but I’m going to go on and say that the “Comrad Plymouth EP” will be on the best albums of 2011 list. The EP looks to be the last taste of Conrad Plymouth, ie Christopher Porterfied, before we get the full installment of Conrad Plymouth the band. This is my favorite Porterfield song by and far, it strikes a nerve somewhere deep within myself and resonates there.

Dreamers Of The Ghetto – “Tether” [mp3]

Dreamers Of The Ghetto have been one of the few bands I’ve pushed heavily throughout 2011 (link) . These guys (and girl) have put in the work and they are right on the cusp of making that transition into something huge. They just released their first 7″ promoting this song with a video to go along with it. I feel I’m slacking for having put up “Tether” three times now since they create great music and not just one great song but there’s plenty of time to get to the rest of the good stuff.

Air Review – “Waiting Lessons”[mp3]

Air Review have slowly taken residence in every playlist I’ve made for myself over the last three months.

Nicolas Jaar – “Work It (Missy Elliott Cover)” [mp3]

Before this cover I had a strong distaste for Missy Elliott, especially for the original of this song in particular.

My feelings about Elliott are yet to change but I do like the approach Jaar took to remaking it. I find this version highly listenable.

.Nerves Junior – “As Bright As Your Night Light” [mp3]

Nerves Junior are everywhere. Each Day it seems they pop-up on a new site or I hear someone mentioning them. They are this falls’ 1,2,3 and they have the sound to back up the hype.

Here’s there newest (Awesome) video for  “Kale”

Blessed Feathers – “Americas” [mp3]

SolarSolar – “I Can’t Find You” [mp3]

An amazingly sad yet chill song, “I Can’t Find You‘ has been immensely  helping me get through some rough emotions lately.

Math And Physics Club – “Weekends Away” [mp3]

This is the ideal video for this song, not because it is incredible but because it is real, fan made real, and that is what the strength of Math And Physics Club songs really is, especially when it comes to “Weekends Away”

Thanks to everyone for the great support lately. When I started Heycoolkid! I never thought people would be as positive towards this site or that it would take off as quickly as it has, especially over the last three months.

I’ve got two playlists coming up this week that should be solid so stop by before the weekend for sure.

As usual… I do not own any of the music on this page. I put it up for strictly promotional purposes knowing that it’s impossible to give a band a solid listen through streaming only. If you are/represent an artist on the page and don’t like postive free promotion let me know and I’ll gladly take the song down. Art is more important than the artists and if we don’t agree on that then you are probably in music for the wrong reasons and I want no part of it.

If there is any music I’m missing or missing the point on let me know.

The Definitive(ish) Hooded Sweatshirt Playlist

31 Aug

Time for night drives, passionate crushes, longing breakups,  and all-night conversations with the best of friends. Fall is finally here and I can’t help but feel that life just gets better the second i get to zip up a hoody.

I grew up in an exceptionally small town between the edge of suburbia and the middle of nowhere. As far as my memories go when i look back it seems my group of friends will always remain in my memory on endless drives through Podunk (it’s a real town) with the leaves changing and the air cooling off.

If I could go back to one point in time it would be on one of those drives, feeling complete but at the same time fighting back an unspoken worry  that with morning would come change, that we would reach the moment called “grown up” and would all say goodbye. Those drives had an undercurrent that whatever we were going to do we had to do it immediately because change was coming, so we drove until the last breathe of night holding on to the moment with the firmest grips and the quietest of hearts.

Never ending  conversations with crushes, falling in love through nothing more than words and and the electricity of being so close and talking so quiet, both truly listening.  Those first kisses that lit my life on fire, those heartbreaks that destroyed me, and those quiet nights when I’d drive alone and reminisce about it all.

Sitting on the hood of my car next to a close friend, in intense conversations about  “what does it all mean,” “is this all that there is to life” and coming to our own conclusions about God and the way everything is broken and pulling apart and yet it all makes sense, it all forms a whole, and how we’re all drawn together by some secret that we couldn’t even begin to understand. How many cigarettes did we smoke in succession on nights like that? How much of anything did we smoke on those nights?

That’s the place I’m at when it comes to making up this playlist. I plan it out all year so that by the time Fall hits and I’m heading down to see my brother in Bloomington or heading back to my hometown to visit family I can pull these songs up on my ipod and feel that fullness once again.

I’m still making memories, I’m growing up but not yet grown up and the friends I have now feel that as well, we’re perpetually in a moment where things are about to change. This fall as with all the ones I’ve known before  reminds me to embrace what we have because soon it will be gone,  so in a way i guess some things will forever remain the same.

The idea of this playlist is to capture all of that, if there’s one mix other than a solid break-up mix where lyrics carry the entire thing this is it. I really hope you find something on here that makes life better or helps you get through the worse or at the least gives you a friend that understands.

Send me a message or comment with your own playlists I’m interested to see what yours would look like.

Jeremy Enigk – “World Waits” - [MP3]

I realize how ridiculously long this post ended up being. I’d debated breaking it up as i had with the “Trapped In Time, Surrounded By Evil, Low On Gas”  playlist but that one was easy to breakdown. Although you may only download one or two tracks in my mind it’ll get listened to as a whole (I may have just truly realized why bands hate downloads instead of listening to an entire album).  Either way I hope you can look past the length and enjoy.

As usual all songs are for promotional purposes only. If you or a band you represent would like some content removed leave a comment or send me an email (the address can be found in thesection).
