A Generation Without A Voice

A Generation without a voice

Look for yourself. How can we sit without sadness? How do we allow ourselves to forget? So many voices, day by day, year by year, receding into an abyssal horizon bathed in shadows of faulty recollection. Thousands of books discarded, burned, damaged by the flood. We are a generation without a voice, a ship without a captain; guided by such a gentle breeze without a shore to wash upon, no rocks to smash against the bow that would arise within us that fire of youth which dwindles. Where has that passion gone? Why do we no longer strive for change? Greed? The need for comfort? The drive for recognition amongst our peers, wanting only for our own names to be listed above the others around us, what is it for? What does it change? Those who should matter are scattered around us, asterisks, cliff notes, merely mentioned as part of a whole that still are recollected without any trace of accuracy or truth. Abby Hoffman,Clara Luper, Charles Tilly, Malcom,Guthrie they fade and fade until they’re nearly forgotten. How much longer until they’re gone? We are a generation without a voice! We are a youth without a cause! And we too will be forgotten. How many wars will it take before we find our courage? What must the body count reach before we listen to that voice within us that isn’t willing to be pacified by the thought that we are too small and strives to let go of the mindless conforming we subject our lives to through fear of derision. You have been deceived into believing nothing ever changes, that nothing ever gets better. And you, you who lie in wait to crucify the first hand to raise, the poor body with the courage to ask a question, you devour their souls with your condescending arrogance. You know nothing and have disillusioned yourself to believe you know everything. We are all part of this mindless mob in constant search of our own Giles Corey. Our education has destroyed our intelligence. We’ve allowed the preposterous “this is” to replace the “why.” There’s no excuse that will not fall short of anything other than the truth that this is our fault. This is my fault. We must learn to personalize everything. Stop searching through channels for the one thing which will think for you. There is nothing easier than letting someone else think for us, longing for someone to tell us “the facts” to “give it to us straight”. Cliche’s…Cliche’s. Wrap your words, your empty truths, around me. Let me feel the comfort of the all powerful belief. Where does this fear come from, the belief that the endless seeking for truth never brings us anything but deception? Are we really so weary and heavy laden to believe the criticism, the constant attempt at disproving even the simplest of facts, how tiresome that is. All I want is truth and they hide it from us. A puppet show of opinion polls and pie charts. We mistake words for actions. Do not align change with the alliteration of problems. If we feel that something is wrong, if that wave swells inside of us don’t force it to subside, don’t talk yourself off the ledge but instead jump wholeheartedly into the unknown, the wings of passion will carry you. What else is worth living for? Be not quick to answer for if you’re not driven with change your life has no value. Embrace that before it’s too late. In all of history has there ever been a youth so wasted as ours? Think freely, ask why, know that the opinion you give is of substance. Let the voices of change not be silenced.

Freud is remembered but Adler goes forgotten this is how history works. Every line must be straight, any deviance or digression must be swept to the side to show how headstrong change is supposed to be. We approach history only with the importance of telling us how we got to this place, in this time, and want to explain that as simply as possible. These complex lives and times, the turmoil within competing with each societies turmoil, we water them down and leave them to hang cracking, fading, in the sunlight of selectivity. How can we place Kafka before Nietzsche, Martin Luther king Jr. before Che Guevara, SHAKESPEARE BEFORE GINSBERG? Our history books are the only literature worth discarding. Rewritten to support false ideals. To only touch on a subject is to spit in it’s face. We look at the timeline as if we are standing on the conclusion, the last date, the fulfillment of change, we’ve reached our potential, we are exactly where we should strive to be. Such filth. Such disappointment. If only I knew the way to open your eyes. If only there were a way to awaken your consciousness. I would give my life to trade knowledge for greed……. Knowledge as currency(!) can you imagine? Everyone could be brilliant. Everyone can be catalysts for something. Through realizing each and everyone of us is nobody we come to find that each of us is legitimately somebody. We are all nothing but yet we can build such fires, can erect such buildings, can destroy such buildings. Rubble and ash and wet concrete the circle returns to itself. There is no beginning. There is no end. It’s a constant buffering of time. And amongst the commotion and nausea we must find lives worth living. Cliches’…Cliches’ could it be you are merely stereotypes with less truth? I cut myself with both sides of that sword. Fox News I hear your opinions and imagine Socrates intellectually walking around it. Drawing what you really believe out. Your own feet will some day grind your opinions beneath them. Someday someday. My pessimistic optimism shakes hands with itself daily. Two sides of the same coin. What guidance could I have other than the voices of giants. So many driven insane by a system that destroys those who oppose it. Pushed to hide in there own shadows until their youth had left them, until all that was left were the thoughts without the focus. They turn in on themselves and devour.

I long to embrace those ghosts, those friends, those allies of the past. Names on paper a part of the whole, lives of substance and focus. Our lives are empty. Are you proud to be part of the problem?

I wrote this a few days ago with no intention of putting it up on the blog. But as I watch facebook and twitter being flooded with joy over the death of Bin Laden and congratulations on a successful war I am completely saddened. I won’t get into the Bin Laden aspect but i will just put again what i posted myself.

Facebook: “sorry if i don’t join in the excitement over someone dying. Really someones death brings you joy?!? You’re proud about that? How about the tens of thousands of people who’ve died “trying to find him” (ahem debatable) ,you think that was worth it? The ending of a life will never bring me happiness and it saddens me that it does for others

and then after being called unpatriotic and being hit with 17 comments (most negative) this was my response

“I believe in humanitarianism. That makes me unpatriotic? The majority of Americans CHOOSE to remain uneducated about the atrocities that have been done in the name of the united states. I believe in what this country was founded on and i don’t believe another American soldier should die, that another family should suffer, for a war that most of us don’t understand anything about. We do nothing to stop anything horrible in the world unless in some way it will benefit us. That is not noble, that is not patriotic, that is being a bully, that is both pretentious and arrogant. How is that an example the world should follow? We should NOT be in Iraq. We should not be in Pakistan. We should not be bombing innocent people in Libya. I would remain quiet if i thought the cost of ONE man was worth MILLIONS OF AMERICAN LIVES, BILLIONS of dollars, and what has come from it. Nearly the entire world see’s us as being tyrants,a people with horrible values, corrupt morals, and a very skewed belief system. A people that think they have the right to kill anyone who doesn’t agree with them. Bring our soldiers home, lets make our OWN country better BEFORE we try to tell the rest of the world how each of their countries should be ran. It’s not unpatriotic to refuse to support evil that is being done in my name. Hate breeds hate and love breeds love show me one example that doesn’t support this

What happened on September 11 was horrible. It should not be forgotten. But was it a valid excuse for attacking everyone in the middle east that doesn’t agree with us?

This is my playlist for how i feel today:

This song fully encapsulates my feelings for America’s warmongering status. What does that say about us as a society that  “Bring Em Home” is still as relevant today as it was fifty years ago?

Woody Guthrie- This land is our land

Don’t write this song off as being outdated or as being just some irrelevant kids song. It is neither.

“In the squares of the city – In the shadow of the steeple Near the relief office – I see my people And some are grumblin’ and some are wonderin’ If this land’s still made for you and me.”

.

Bob Dylan- The lonesome death of hattie carrol (live)  Portugal the man- People Say  John Lennon- Give Peace A Chance

One of the greatest recordings ever. There’s nothing about this song that isn’t perfect.

Sorry if I’ve offended anyone through this post. that’s not the intention. I just don’t think our friends should keep dying for this. And don’t give me that whole “they’re heroes. you wouldn’t be free if they didn’t put their lives on the line for you” campaign. We’d be much better off if they were here in front of the courthouses and in front of political offices standing up against those who keep taking those freedoms away from us.  Stop bombing and destroying countries and telling me it’s for the “greater good”. If you were woken in the middle of the night to half of your house blown up and half of your family dead, what would it take for you to believe it was for a good purpose? We gave Iraq freedom but destroyed their entire country so that it now looks like a post-apocalyptic landscape,  to them that’s probably what it is. The national deficit is rising and rising. Would we be doing so many educational cuts if we weren’t spending millions of dollars on bombs for lybia? Only through acceptance and love can we change anything.  I want change.
