Pretentiously Unpretentious…July 2011

Pheramones- We Already Know

.

.

.

.

.

.When in doubt open with pheramones. At least that’s my philosophy when it comes to playlists i’m not sure what the track 1 should be. Energy, talent, pretentiously unpretentious… these guys have it all when it comes to being an ideal indie band. This song is a perfect example that they were ahead of the curve when putting this out in 2009.

Steel Phantoms- Fast Stop

.

.

.

.

.

Whenever listening to steel phantoms i can’t help but think this is what Caleb McCoach would sound like if he were more upbeat or maybe this is what Ra Ra Riot would come across like if they were more indie and less scene. Either way i dig steel phantoms and their ability to sound real and worth my time listening to.

.

Seapony- Dreaming

Just lo-fi enough to keep things interesting Seapony are one of the few bands who have found a way to embrace the hipster trend without using it as a crutch to hide behind. This is a genre they belong in unlike so many other (over) hyped bands i’m forced to listen to in growing numbers each week.

ARMS- Tiger Tamer

Todd Goldstein has that (sadly) rare ability of creating songs with such solid lyrics coupled with well fitting instrumentation that it appears effortless in the most flawless sort of way. Not that they are minimalistic but something about his songs sound like he knows how to do just enough for the track to come across contently and complete without weighing the song down by doing too much. Arms is currently on tour with Steel Phantoms and i didn’t know that until after this mix had been made, nice little coincidence.

Alex Winston- Sister Wife

I spent the weekend in Wisconsin with my girlfriend and her family and the most horrible disaster imaginable happened to me on the way there, my ipod died and to make things exponentially worse my girlfriend decided not to bring her mac for me to keep it charged. AAAHHHH! I was in the land of country music without a prayer.  The nearest place to buy anything other than skoal or cow feed was a walmart forty minutes away. FAIL. The trip itself was enjoyable enough that i was able to overlook the absence of hope for a few days but the drive home became a nightmare. Two hours of standstill traffic had me rummaging through the glovebox in search of a different mix from the one  we’d been listening to on repeat for the entire trip since the ipod debacle.  Like watching the heavens part and a dove descend i found a handful of burnt cd’s buried beneath my gf’s  scion manual and random pieces of glovebox parchment.  We were inching through Chicago when this track came on and turned the ole frown upside down. To anyone that was stuck on the i80/94 watching some guy dance frantically while his girlfriend watched on with fear… that was me and i had my reasons.

Cults – Make Time

.

.

.

.

.

.

.“Make Time” is one of my favorite tracks for any background playlist. It’s a perfect song to have on when doing things (or in my usual case… planning to do things). I’m not sure why i haven’t heard more buzz heading in Cults direction, i’m sure it’s coming.

.

.

Psychic Powers- Dreamboat (RAC Mix)

..

.

.

.

.

.

.

Amo Joy- Diggity Doom

.

.

.

.

.

It’s not much of a secret that i think Amo Joy are one of the better bands in town. Fun, intense, and sneakily solid. A band truly meant for more than Indianapolis has to offer them,  I hope they realize that before it’s too late.

.

.

In Tall Buildings- Warm Rock

.

.

.

.

.

.I had In Tall Buildings on a recent playlist for one of his more stripped down songs. I just want to make sure that everyone realizes there is a reason Erik Hall isn’t considered a solo artists, i think this song gets the job done of proving that.

.

.

Pheramones- I Wait

I rarely put two songs on a mix from the same band.  Every now and thenthere is a band worth the exception and this is one. It took me nine songs before i finally gave into the urge to put this song up. I wait is probably my favorite pheramones song and i can’t believe i haven’t put it up already.

.

.

The Milk Carton Kids- Maybe It’s Time (live)

.

.

.

.

.

.This song doesn’t really need a description it speaks for itself. Here’s a chance to check it out though.

.

.

Meredith Bragg – Birds of North America

.

.

.

.

.Any band that succesfully creates well layered songs that are allowed to breathe will always be underrated. Meredith Bragg is underrated.

.

.

The West Valley – Lay Down

.

.

.

.

.

.Every time one of The West Valley’s songs comes up i find the next three minutes flowing much more enjoyably.  Lay down reminds me slightly of “travellin’ song” by the avett brothers but only enough as a reference while still coming across in it’s own creative way. My favorite track from The West Valley is “I wonder what would’ve happened” so don’t be surprised when that comes up on another heycoolkid post in the near future, lay down just seemed to flow better with this weeks collection of songs, if you feel like getting ahead of me and grab it for yourself here .

.

.

Vetiver- Everyday

A great song to play on a summer evening, it’s definitely been played on many of mine.

.

.

.

This Will Destroy You- The World Is Our _

.

.

.

.

.

Although Vetiver’s “Everyday” is probably a better closing song for this week, i’m ending this one with an amazing song from This Will Destroy You. Don’t let the lack of vocals mislead you, this song has something to say that ninety-nine percent of bands can only hope to.

Let me know if there’s any music i may be missing or missing the point of. All songs are for promotion purposes only so if you are/represent an artist on this page and would like something removed let me know and i’ll be more than happy to both do it and never recommend your music again. Nothing personal but if word of mouth is less important than making a couple of dollars you are in it for the wrong reasons and that’s something i want nothing to do with.
