Surrounded By Ghosts

28 Feb

Really?

I’m doing what I can to get caught up on all of the music I’ve missed in the last month. Here’s what’s making life better at the moment.

Dream Brother – “Haunted Heart (ft Paul Spranger)”

Dream Brother

I was already stoked to have Ian from One For The Team putting out some solo material but the fact that he’s brought Paul Spranger (Free Energy) on board for “Haunted Hearts” makes it exponentially better, just hit play you’ll agree.

Snowmine – “Curfews”

Snowmine

Brooklyn’s Snowmine have consistently put out solid psych-pop since showing up on the radar early last year. They dropped “Curfews” back in November and I’m just now getting to embrace it’s uplifting and downright catching flow, this one’s gonna be getting played all year, I can feel it.

Typhoon – “The Honest Truth”

Typhoon

I’m not sure why I didn’t include this song on the “Best Songs Of 2011” list… hands down it’s got one of the best bridges I’ve ever heard, all of that potential blogs have been praising Typhoon for comes together in one fantastic flash of brilliance, it’s a slow build that delivers… I can’t wait for what comes next from these guys.

Carousel – “Open Road”

Carousel

I’m still standing by “Know It’s Right” as being the best song to come out thus far this year. Carousel have captivated my attention in 2012, I can’t think of anyone else putting out music lately that has moved me even close to how these guys have.

If I had heard “Open Road” first I probably would say this one is my favorite. The lyrics are everything that gets me all sorts of pumped when explaining music. I put this one on about six hours into my drive from Indy to Austin and it had me feeling one hundred percent better about the place I was at in life.

The odd thing is that I typically  reserve this sort of admiration for more acoustic leaning music, I think that’s what makes me use words like “impress” when trying to explain Carousel to other people.

Dads – “Dan’s Christopher Walken Impersonation”

Dads

I have absolutely zero idea how to categorize Dads. I do know that out of all the music I’ve been listening to with a heavy tint lately these guys are probably the gnarliest. “Dan’s Christopher Walken Impersonation” puts a math-rockish spin on what blew my mind about music in 2002. Part of me wants to say that I wish more bands were making music like this yet then again would I still be as geeked about a song like this? … Yeah, I’m sure I would.

Old Gray – “Headaches (feat. Joe McAndrew)”

Old Gray

Sure I just posted an Old Gray song like two days ago, what can I say I’ve really been getting down on these guys. “Headaches” reminds me so much of early Senses Fail that if I didn’t know better I’d believe this was some long lost demo. I cannot wait to see these guys live!

For those who snub there nose at this genre let me show you why it’s more than relevant and as important as any other form of art out there.

“I’m tired of giving you examples of times  I  said things I’d later regret. This is the last time I’ll admit to having periods of self doubt, feeling sorry for myself. I’ve spent the last four years making new best friends who after a few more months I won’t ever see again. I’m so damn sorry that I fucked up. And despite all my best efforts to analyze the minds of great writers by studying the words they once wrote, I’m no closer to cracking Joyce than I am myself. Is it always like this, or is it in my head? I’m sorry for everything.”

More passion than 99% of bands out there and when you take the time to break it down there’s REAL lyrical talent. I’ve said this many times before, I think some of the greatest lyrics ever written have been by hardcore bands and rarely do people ever takes the time to see it.

XV ft. Wiz Khalifa – “Gobstopper (Figure Remix)”

Figure

Although I do listen to rap it’s a pretty rare occasion for me to hear a song that makes me think it’s worthy of putting up. I found this over at This Song Is Sick which if you’ve never visited the site it typically lives up to the name (with the exception of any track featuring Drake, I don’t care how good the dubstep remix is, if he’s on the track it’s only worthy of skipping).

Don’t get me wrong the lyrics for “Gobbstopper” are far from brag worthy or even worth replaying but now that Figure put in some serious work this one is party ready.

Secret Knives – “The Cage”

Secret Knives

Secret Knives are one of my favorite bands and it’s been a while since I’ve put something up from them. Here’s one of the best tracks from 2008’s The Wolves, which, as with all of their albums, can be snatched up for free through their bandcamp link below.

QUALMS – “Ghost Bones (ft. Orca Orca)”

Qualms

I put up ” When The Sun Comes Up (Ft. Qualms)” from Orca Orca  last week and just realized that I completely skipped over this track I found on Birp! a while ago. I’m not as familiar with Qualms but I’m in the process of correcting that, if the rest of their music is half as good as “Ghost Bones” count on seeing more songs of theirs included on future playlists.

Phineas And The Lonely Leaves – “Museum Of The Gone”

Phineas And The Lonely Leaves

Phineas And The Lonely Leaves are probably one of my top five favorite bands of all-time, if not they are most definitely in the top 10. There are maybe three songs of theirs that don’t just set everything absolutely in place. “Museum Of The Gone”  sends that wave of sadness they give off so well from the very first note. I’m so ready for some new music from these guys or to see them play live, either one would be perfect.

When my Toyota was packed and I had the key in the ignition every part of me wanted to put on an upbeat song to set things in a positive direction but it was this one that I had to hear for some reason… it’s kind of been on repeat ever since, I can’t shake it.

The Parade Schedule – “Dancing”

The Parade Schedule

Let’s end this week on a positive yet somber note.

What’s to say about this song, give yourself a moment  to relax and put this one on it speaks for itself.
